Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?
I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

So true.
My back and hips are being affected badly. So is general health.
Yes certainly have 4 1/2 years later Now two bursas have become very painful However have been told they can't be treated as it could affect the TKR
My ortho told me 5 months after the surgery I was one of the 15 to 20% who would likely have issues I also have inoperable scoliosis and stenosis and a few compression fractures plus a few fractures in my spine
This all happened end.if 2023 I am now 81 and am in line for hip orthoplasty on XS Tylenol. Am.in Canada

1 ReactionI'm so sorry.....I have stenosis in my lower spine and L4/L5 issues, I was told as well some just have issues after and apparently I am one. I never had any of these issues with my back and hips and thigh muscles till this knee replacement. I'm 64 here in the states. Even my other knee bothers me at times and I never ever want to do a TRK again.

1 ReactionI am two years post revision tka. I definitely had that feeling like a big elastic band was around my knee and now it's gone but I've done a lot of exercise and stretching and forcing my knee to flex as far as possible even kneeling and weight bearing. It's probably scar tissue. Massage etc isn't as effective as actually moving the knee in and out of the uncomfortable tight positions.

2 Reactions@cobweb I get it. My first one was almost 6 yrs ago and have suffered with this for 5 of those years. 1 year out from second TKR and that tight band is now starting there too. Pretty soon I wont be able to walk. I wish they would tell you some of this before you have surgery....
@cindymattern Oh my gosh. I thought I was alone in this. I feel so much worse off than before surgery. Yes there was pain before but it was not constant. This is constant. Mainly left leg from hip to knee. Had second knee replacement 1 year abo and it is all starting on the other leg now too. I s ee others that have no problems at all and I am jealous.
I’m 4 months post surgery (age 72) and I still have the ‘band around the knee’ feeling, along with stiffness and pain. I think it’s scar tissue surrounding the joint and I agree that stretching and exercise are important. Tylenol and ibuprofen help before exercise but it’s pretty annoying.
In response to your tight band question; oh yes I know that feeling. I am 7 months out and still have it, but it has gotten better and continues to do so. My understanding is that this is all normal with the recovery. It definitely has gotten better over time. My issue is that the doctor/s don’t give you the full picture prior to surgery; meaning pain level and recovery time. I guess if they did that they wouldn’t have any takers. I told my doc this and he totally agreed. Hang in there; it will get better; I just wish I had known the extent of healing and recovery, but my knee was really messed up.

1 Reaction@jematal I too had that band feeling. I was told by physical therapist that it is the IT band. Some say it can be stretched and pain relieved with a foam roller. Mine finally went away but I am having issues with my patella. I too wish I knew of these possible side effects.
@ladydiscdy 10 months out and I still have it tightness stiffness It’s probably scar tissue and synovial fluid.
