Can weight gain cause progression from MGUS to myeloma?

Posted by amyboylan1 @amyboylan1, May 13 11:25am

I have been diagnosed with MGUS. I have read that weight gain can cause progression from MGUS to MM. I’ve gained quite a bit I think due to the anti depressants and food cravings. I’m so upset with myself. Please tell me about any experience or information you have about this. I’m would greatly appreciate it. I have my six month blood check in a few weeks and am very concerned. Thank you, Amy

I did find this from Sloan Ketterling. I'm not sure all the MGUS experts agree that a plant-based diet will slow down or stop progression..

I have been following this diet. It is low sugar. High nutrients. My IgG kappa lowered .2 when it’s gone up every year. Exercise also helps. Instead of eating at night drink water and pat your belly and say I will be healthier with only eating healthy food. It helps. And try not to eat out!!

Amy don’t beat yourself up. We are humans. We try and try. Keep going don’t give up. Butterfly hugs help too!

Why, indeed?! why can't it be something easy like giving up turnips?
Fruits and vegetables rather than red meat are a plus if you're trying to lose weight just generally speaking.
I'm not an expert. Any nutrition savvy folks want to weigh (haha) in?

There are studies that report being overweight or obese increases risk of progressing to MM.
Also SparkCures.com lists some plant based diets that may DECREASE risk.
I totally sympathize.

I dropped 28lbs since sept. While my overall health is better my numbers still have increased. I have read that a plant based diet is being studied and there are active trials in reference to its connections.

Hi. I have all of these and they are all abnormal or out of range. My last Dr. said I shouldn't worry because they fluctuate. I am not on any special diet I just try and eat healthy. I lost 17 pounds but it didn't affect these numbers. I'm curious about your question, too.
