Can weight gain cause progression from MGUS to myeloma?
I have been diagnosed with MGUS. I have read that weight gain can cause progression from MGUS to MM. I’ve gained quite a bit I think due to the anti depressants and food cravings. I’m so upset with myself. Please tell me about any experience or information you have about this. I’m would greatly appreciate it. I have my six month blood check in a few weeks and am very concerned. Thank you, Amy

I was also told I need to lose weight to help with the MGUS AND FATTY LIVER DISEASE . I changed my eating less red meats I've also do less portions of my foods. But I've also quit smoking 3 yrs ago and with all my health problems and now taking the Mounjaro shot for my A1C is now 6.8 and says I lost 3 lbs. But I do alot I mean alot of snacking. I think I need it but I'm eating less meals and more snacks but I've been eating alot of nuts and alot of sugar i think I need it but I think I'm a nervous eater and stress and cause I stop smoking
The short answer appears to be yes, excess weight is a risk factor for progression of MGUS to MM, especially weight gain following diagnosis.

@amyboylan1 I've been trying to get motivated to drop 30 pounds and I banked this study to remind me why maintaining a healthy weight is so important. Your post encouraged me to pull it up and read it again.

One thing I am quite sure about is that shame is a poor motivator for weight loss. Food is definitely culturally and personally relevant to me! It seems like all the fun things center around it. And, I find it comforting when I'm sad, stressed or bored.
I know that there are links to weight loss on Connect but perhaps there is benefit to a discussion that focuses on MGUS/smoldering Multiple Myeloma and weight loss. Some are getting good results with plant based. I live with a meat loving husband and it's not my first choice as well so I would be interested in other plans.
Any ideas to share?

Hey congratulations on your A1c and weight reduction. Celebrate each victory. My problem is I always want to celebrate by eating. 😂
Quitting smoking is a big deal. Nicotine addiction is a really tough one to shake so congratulations on that as well.
When I'm trying to change my behavior, I analyze to see if there are any associated patterns and then I intentionally do something different to change that behavior. I'm sure that's probably what you did with smoking. So eating healthy might take the same kind of strategy.
My problem is not that I don't have a strategy it's that I don't follow it. I guess I lack commitment. I'm going to strive to do better.
Will you let me know how this is going for you? What do you do that is helpful?
Thank you for the comments
I dont know if everyone has alot of pain but I hurt alot and I feel like it's the cause of MGUS
But I'm being told that it's not
It's really hard for me to stay away from sweets.
I'm trying to stay away from it but it seems really hard like I cant it's an addiction I feel
My blood levels are high my Kappa / Lambda high it's 2.58
My total Protein is high 8.4
IGg is 1.955
So I feel like somewhere in these blood levels there must be away to make them go down
I go to KU but my dr tells me everything is good
I don't my blood work every 6 months now and I do it and then I see my levels before the dr does I dont know how every does it but i have to wait a week before I talk to my dr
I flip out scared it's going to turn into MM because I've lost 2 family members from cancer within the last 5-6 yrs
But i want to know how we can all get through this should we eat less protein and more grains or less grains
There is something out there that we all can do to fight it
I fill helpless
I was told less red meats and more vegetables and fruits low carbs
But can someone else tell me I hear this all the time if I do these it will help lose weight and help with the MGUS AND FATTY LIVER DISEASE
Why is it always lose weight to blame why we're health is bad
Diagnosed MM Jan '24- I've read there is a very slight chance of MUGS turning to MM? Outside factors play a role... diet, stress, weight management etc. I'm not sure with MUGS but ask Dr what your Para protein level is if it shows with MUGS bloodwork/diagnosis.
@sheryl71
Why, indeed?! why can't it be something easy like giving up turnips?
Fruits and vegetables rather than red meat are a plus if you're trying to lose weight just generally speaking.
I'm not an expert. Any nutrition savvy folks want to weigh (haha) in?
@sheryl71
I did find this from Sloan Ketterling. I'm not sure all the MGUS experts agree that a plant-based diet will slow down or stop progression..

The annual chance of MGUS progressing to MM depends considerably more on the MGUS risk level (low, intermediate, high) than on any "outside factors". There is no quick way to describe the assessment of risk level. It depends on multiple tests, frequently done at different times (to show variation in results, if any), as professionally interpreted (preferably by a hematologist / oncologist). Thanks for the article. I was able to read the overview without a subscription which is probably enough without weeds.
