Does anyone find that a type of shoe helps your foot neuropathy?

Posted by lorirenee1 @lorirenee1, Mar 25, 2019

I am on a constant quest for shoes that don't kill my feet due to the neuropathy. I find that Spencos and Wolky shoes seem the best. Are there any other suggestions? Shoes can be just crippling for me. Horrid.

That sounds like a great combination. You can walk with running shoes, but you cant run with walkin shoes - or at least I can't. The steel toe socks add a little extra cushion which I think helps balance. Thanks.

Here is my PN story. We all know, there are so many parts of our bodies that get old and slow down. It can be breathing, seeing, hearing, understanding and on and on. Here, we all look for the "guy" who has the same or similar ailment and find out what they have done to relieve the pain. Right? We are on this helpful site. When there is less pain, we move better. accomplish more and probably are more pleasant to be around. Here's my deal, it surprises me still. I started with undiagnosed PN in the 80's. Nobody knew anything. I used a walker because of such severe foot pain and also thought I would fall. A Podiatrist could not figure it out and decided to do surgery. (Duh, I agreed) It failed miserably and the DR told me to walk on my rt heel for one year. (Thanks, Doc) BTW, that caused severe rt hip displacement and sciatica, which I am still suffering from. Moving on, I was finally actually diagnosed with actual PN and I heard the "Sorry, no cure." But all these years later, although my pain is constant, not increasing, and it is MUCH LESS painful for the past 20 years, compared to the start! Remember, this started in the 80's. I did have to change my job from Outside Sales to an inside job. My story is to say, there is HOPE, and maybe, all the new comers will have a similar experience as time goes by. It took me a lot of time and flat shoes with thick socks, bla, bla, bla, but the pain is there, but finally has NOT increased, and I am now 90. We are glad for small favors, 'cause there's only so much we can take! Wishing you all the BEST!

Barefoot Shoes definitely outweigh the risks with so many models for sport & dress-up. They work to strengthen your calves, ankles & balance. They help you drive more safely because the soles are thin & help you feel the pedals. Please try them again. Get them on Amazon & exchange them for other models if a model is not right for you. They are made for Neuropathy sufferers & they work for me & I’ve had serious symptoms for 15 years.

@lorirenee1 and @retiredteacher -- I buy Sketchers slip ons but like any shoes with memory foam inserts they aren't much good after 5 or 6 months. For me I need shoes that I can easily slip on but yet give support sideways. Most tennis shoe type shoes don't give me ankle support.

I also have had success with Skechers slip on shoes, but similarly, the relief only lasts a few months as the insoles lose their resilience over time. Nevertheless, it is wonderful to walk without pain. I cannot afford to replace the shoes every 3-4 months, so I would love to hear of a more permanent solution.

I thought for neuropathy one needs more support on the sole to act as shock absorbers.

I have several pairs of cushioned soles that are comfortable but not as versatile as the barefoot shoes which are great for exercise & better for walking & driving since the soles are thin & you can feel the pedals. There are plenty to choose from & most of them are inexpensive.

Oh ! They are better for walking too? Then what do you use the cushioned sole ones for?

Interesting... I have had the sensation of "walking on marbles" for as long as I can remember (memory fade) and in recent times have been formally diagnosed with nerve damage, filed under "peripheral neuropathy" and being treated with Pregabalin (previously Gabapentin). Wouldn't think it is helping much until I stop taking it and then I know for sure it is doing something! I would be interested to know more about the laser treatment and secondly, did you ever find an insole worth spending money on?

I am sales on water shoes, I can wear them all day and my feet don’t hurt! A lot of people wearing them for neuropathy. I get mine of Amazon. They have men’s and women’s. Hope this helps. They are very very reasonable.

My Ortho Feet , Sketchers& Hokas are gathering dust in my closet. I’ll give them away to people who will love them with normal feet. I’ll wear my black Barefoot Shoes with a tuxedo 😁
