My legs collapsing underneath me without warning since I’ve been on ga

Posted by woody52 @woody52, 4 days ago

Eight years ago I moved back to Wisconsin and during that time I noticed my hands shaking and enrolled at my old family hospital
I was prescribed Propaninal and within months it eliminated most of my hand shaking
About a year or so later I was in the same hospital network and had an emergency visit where they crated my chest and found a minor anuryism on my aorta
At that time my doctor stopped the propaninol and put me on gabapentin for my tremors
It took over a year to start helping with the ET’s in my hands
At about same time my back was aching terribly and saw orthopedic team at same hospital and they said gabapentin would relieve pain and increased dosage
At that time my legs would give out under me
Now my legs can’t navigate going down stairs without my collapsing of which I’ve done now over 6 times in last year
I walk 3-6 miles a day but with no confidence my legs will hold me up
I’m 72 snd 150lbs staying in very good shape
Until gabapentin
My legs collapsing underneath is increasing and it’s really affecting my life style
The propaninol worked but doctor switched me to gabapentin of which has crippled me in doing steps
And suggestions

Woody52,
Maybe
Consider another MRI to determine cause and hopefully a path to resolution of pain; stopping the gabapentin blind guessing tells me that the gait problems and collapse are caused by the gabapentin; try myoblock or botox injections for the essential tremors.
Best wishes.

Thank you
It’s been 4 days on cutting my dosage by 50% per day
My legs are seeming to be more steady
Not sure if it’s actual or what I want to believe
Yesterday gave a total of 5.6 miles in walking at 3 mph
I will deal with ET’s but my legs and stability are waaay more important
Your comments are well taken and appreciated

woody, my mom used to get myobloc injecions for essential tremor. Myobloc instead of botox because it tends to migrate less. It was completely effective sometimes for 6 months. The doctor would find the muscle in the arm that had certain frequencies at rest. She had a machine that located the muscle. The injections were in the forearm.
There are so many minimally invasive was to resolve back pain. I hope you pursue that avenue.
You trusted yourself about the gabapentin and proved yourself right. Cheers.

Thank you so very much
I’ll look into
Funny how my physician couldn’t have provided me with such years ago
I guess if I would have had Aftermarket Implants, a cute face and offered a Nite Out as a Med Sales Rep I would have known what Gabby can leave an unsuspecting patient with
I now find more useful medical info on line than from my Doc
Thank you again!!!

I had twitching and my legs collapsed for years. (I’m 63). I was tested for everything to no avail. My own research suggested I was short of glutathione. There are many ways to get the liver to produce more. Take milk thistle supplements to support the liver, and eat dried peaches or apricots. If it’s a glutathione deficiency that may help.

several years ago, my right leg just got weak, and i nearly fell. Mine wasn't real bad as it would feel weak, for a while, then be back to normal most of the day.. Over 2 yrs, i saw a couple of different MD's, a Neurologist, Homeopathic Dr., naturopathic Dr. No one knew what to do. also tried a few sessions with accupuncture. No help. Saw a chiropractor, no help, finally saw another chiropractor, while he was doing his therapy, i said, i have a tens unit at home, could that help. He said, yes it could. He pressed two areas on my back and said that is where to put the electrodes. I had him put a band aid on the spots, to make sure i got them on the right area. I went home, attached the electrodes, then thought, oh darn, i didn't think to ask how long to leave them on,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.so i kept the unit on for 45 minutes. took the electrodes off, and hadn't had weak legs again, for 20 years. It wasn't the legs that was making them go weak, it was connected to my back, Lc, or those alphas a chiropractor uses. 20 yrs later, my leg is getting weak again, but, the chiropractor is retired, and the other 2 i saw, doesn't have a clue of what to do..........i am tho, taking 20 grams of collagen a day, and doing ONE exercise that is helping. I also purchased a couple of red light therapy wrap around pads. when i wrap it around my thigh for 30 minutes, then stand up, my leg feels stronger for a while.............sure wish the chiropractor was still working, as he was the only dr., out of many, who actually knew what to do.

You were on track with your use of TENS nerve stimulation
Thanks for that suggestion

I’ve been on Gabapentin for 6 yrs
I couldn’t figure out why my legs would collapse without any warning
It didn’t happen that often
I’ve recently lost all ability to go Down Stairs without doing so 1 step at a time while holding on tight to railing
I’ve cut my dosage in half for going on a week and I feel like my legs are getting back stability somewhat but need to taper off the Gabapentin slowly
Im going to begin a Turmeric program on my own given the high degree of positive comments I’ve read by others
Anything other than Gabapentin

Unfortuately that drug can cause muscle weakness. Go on google and see all the side effects. then check out what Tumeric supplements are used for. I took them before for inflammation, and arthritis.........But if the drug has created the muscle weakness, i don't know how you would go about building the muscles back up. I think you will need more then tumeric. Physical therapy might help, but i don't know if that either will rebuild . If all else fails, maybe search for a Naturopath Dr., or chiropractor who uses a Tens unit, and an Ultrasound wand...........those also, may not work. This is like a needle in the haystack, where sometimes you just have to keep searching for an answer...........sometimes my personal searches for an answer have taken more than a couple of years, before i found the .....out of the box......one that works for me...........on line, check out.......can an ultrasound wand help for leg weakness..............if so, you can buy one for around $50, to $150 and use it at home. aprx 5 to 10 minutes a day and only 3 times a week. Just another avenue in that "haystack" to check out.
