Spinal fusion and possible laminectomy have been recommended!
My orthopedic doctor and a spine surgeon in his group have recommended spinal fusion and possibly laminectomy. The more I read about it, the more terrified I become! And the success/failure rate (checking multiple sources) is not that great! Recovery from the fusion could take up to 6 months. I also have EDS which could extend that time! I am 73 years old, petite and thin. Does anyone have anything to comment, pro or con? Thanks so much!

Wow! Congrats, but I am so sorry for all that you went through!
I had aSpinal Fusion plus 3 of my disc's replaced with titanium disc's ( 3, 4, 5 ) I was 84 at the time .Surgery was 5 1/2 hours. My pain has been relieved but my right foot is a ' Drop foot ".
My balance is still bad ,I use a cane and I' m unabl e to raise my legs high . My Neuropathy has not improved despite 3 years of PT. I am now doing my PT at home ,I have all the necessary equipment mentioned to do the exercises. I am thankful to have no pain and I am thankful for being alive. I thank God every day.
You are amazing! Congratulations. You are a role model for all of us.... I'm interested in hearing how you reached this point that required so much to fix? But if you don't feel like going into it, I totally understand! So happy that you are feeling so much better!!
Keep healing and happy days for you!!!

Thank you Bob.
In 1971 I was playing in a Softball League. I played 3 rd base
I caught a line drive with my bare left hand and threw to first for a double play. My back went into a spasm.I eventually had a lamenectomy on L5 that same year due to the excruciating pain. I recovered quickly and continued playing softball and touch football. I also continued my Strength Training. I loved the weight training but I used very heavy weights. In 2012 I was in excruciating pain again from my weight training and the pressure of carrying my 230 lbs since I was 16 years old.
In 2015 I had a lamenectomy on L3,4,and 5. They also drilled out the Stenosis in those areas. In 2016 I had right hip replacement surgery, in 2018 I had right knee
replacement surgery.
In 2019 I had my left knee replaced. My back pain picked up again and I had problems walking. I had pain injections up to 2021 when I had surgery to a back Ligament to relieve the pressure on my Spine. It was unsuccessful. I went to see a 36 year old Neurosurgeon who told me he could help but there would be some side effects. In 2022 the 5 1/2 hr. Surgery was performed. I no longer had pain but I had a dropped right ft. and limited leg movement.
In 2023 I had my left hip replaced.
I have continued to exercise to keep moving so I don't end up in a wheelchair.I promised my wife who is 22 years younger than me that I am going to live beyond 100 with the good Lord's help which I pray for every day.
You are really the bionic man! I admire your tenacity to keep 'getting back on the horse'! Your wife is a lucky lady!
And I figured out your 'handle'! Very clever! However, my name is not Bob, my 'handle' is the combination of nicknames of my husband, myself, and my daughter!
I wanted to mention different type of therapy that I recently discovered. It is 'Functional Manual Therapy', and I won't try to explain it but I included two links where you can find out more information. I only have gone for three sessions, insurance doesn't cover this : ( so it gets costly. But I believe that if I had the time and money it is possible that I could have avoided surgery! I was so close to the surgery and I am in so much pain that I decided to go through with the operation.... but I will return to this as my resources will allow. I definitely believe it can help my underlying condition which the surgeons have said indicate that it is likely I will need one or two fusion surgeries down the road!
It might be worth looking into.... It is relatively unknown in general, and of course surgeons aren't very encouraging when they are not part of the picture! Anyway, good luck ...I think you have plenty off of that, and you really are amazing!
Keep pumping the iron!! : )

Thank you for the information. Goodluck with your Surgery. I will pray for you and a successful Surgery. I am sorry that you are in so much pain.
I have found that if one has confidence in their Surgeon recovery is enhanced.
Please keep me apprised of your progress.
Thanks! Will do!

@mykeatwater That is scary for sure. The anesthesia does a number too. Even though I took no oxycodone after I left the hospital, I did have constipation for about a week. I also had some trapped phlegm from the anesthesia, and I developed a lung infection and needed antibiotics 5 days later. Now I know what to watch out for.
WOW! That is awful... TERRIFYING! I'm sorry that you went through that!
I have resisted the oxycodone for a weeks, rarely I will take a third, maybe a half, but as the time gets closer (tomorrow's the big day!) the pain gets worse and I can barely get to sleep the pain is so intense... I took half when I went to bed last night (well, about an hour+ after I TRIED to go to sleep! ) And I've been eating laxative gummies but alas, to no avail as of yet... I told my husband to buy me lots of prunes!!
Are you all back in good shape now?
