HoLEP vs Aquablation, which is better?

Posted by cardscrazysteve @cardscrazysteve, 2 days ago

I’m schedule for a HoLEP in July in Rochester Mayo and am wondering if I made the right choice vs Aquablation. I am 67 and don’t care about ejaculation but worry about side effects, incontinence, pelvic exercises and getting quick results. I forgot is Aquablation an overnight stay?
I do want permanent results. I don’t want to go through this again. Thanks for your responses.

I had HoLEP in March25, I am fully recovered with no leakage, no incontinence, the only lingering issue that lasted the longest was the burning sensation after peeing...but now that is over.
Good Luck!

First, I wanna wish you the best of luck on your journey. Almost all the surgery was required. At least an overnight stay especially if you are single or live alone. Somebody has to watch you for the first 24 hours after to make sure you don’t have any immediate reactions to the anesthetic or any other part of the surgery. There’s no simple way to put this, but everybody has a different recovery. It’s like a fingerprint. I wish you to have the fastest recovery possible and no pain.

With all that being said, I went for HOLEP
It’s been just over three months now I’m fully recovered that I know of
I go to the bathroom once a night that’s it
If I have any future problems developing, I haven’t seen them yet

Same but I also have recovery guilt, after reading so many people that do not come back as quickly

I'm on the other side of the fence. I was registered with one of the best Holep surgeons in America and waited an extra six weeks on a catheter for an aquablation. I didn't like the idea of having a laser burn out most of my prostate. I am also fully recovered. No incontinence, one trip to the bathroom at night, no retrograde ejaculation. There is only one surgeon in Connecticut who does aquablation and he is very good.

The downside of aquablation...there is more bleeding. I stayed in the hospital an extra day and probably received 20000 liters of saline. The bleeding completely stopped at the end of my second week. I went back to work at the end of my third. My prostate was 110 grams. I'm 65 and in good shape. One other downside to aquablation. Approximately 50% of my prostate was liquified and removed...but it could grow back. I'm eating plenty of pumpkin seeds, broccoli, and tomato sauce. With Holep you've hollowed out the prostate and it is not growing back. Hope that helps.

Well, it’s great that you got the problem taken care of regardless of which procedure you chose. I opted for the faster recovery time. Plus with aqua ablation they really don’t take out as much as they do with the laser which means the potential for re growth and a second ablation in your future is more likely than mine. Mine has been taken out although it can regrow. It won’t regrow fast enough before I die.And only what they left. What was taken out Cant grow back( median lobe)that fast
