Slow transit constipation and surgery
Hi, I have slow transit constipation and Ive tried everything with little help. Amitiza, linzess, trulance...diet modification, pelvic floor therapy...etc. It affects the quality of my life every day. It started at 18 and im almost 34. I cannot maintain a job or even finish school. Just saw a new gastro and he wants me to "drag my feet" on surgery. I know it is not to be taken lightly but i want a life, while im rather young. Just really stressed and would like any thoughts or info that would help. Thanks.

to everyone that is suffering with STC and stomach empting. I tried everything my GI went back to old fashioned remedy. I take 1.5 mil of Mineral oil Food Grade every night with applesauce before bed. I do go everyday when I was going every seven days or so. i don't have full empty of colon however, I get relief from the spasms and tighting of lower stomach. Talk to GI
Hi have you tried those medications with some over the counter laxatives like miralax or magnesium to help things get moving or seen a motility specialist. Maybe a specialist might have some ideas. I completely understand your frustration. I am on Motegrity and some over the counter laxatives. I am retired. I don’t think I could work with all this diarrhea. It’s been a life changing illness. Hang in there.
I have tried everything. the mineral oil for me is a lubricant that helps things slide out. I don't get diarrhea.
Yes my colon has no mobilty. We tried to see how things are moving and did the radioactive tracers. They did not move at all in 3 days. All 15 still in system and in same location. Trying to keep me from having colon removed.
Hello @sensationalsmilesinc and welcome to Mayo Connect. From your posts I see that you have struggled with slow constipation for some time, now. How long ago were you diagnosed with this?
Many of us with this problem have had surgeries of the digestive tract or diabetes. Was there a surgery or other health issue which caused this problem for you as well?
They are not sure. No surgeries however. three years ago I had terrible anxiety attacks that lasted about two months and they could not get rid of them. I was put on all different medications. Then the anxiety went away left with severe mobility problems of stomach and colon. I had a upper scope and the foumd that my Esophagus was narrowed so they did a dialtion hope that is what caused the problem. That was not the culprit. I went from 128lbs at 5 ft 9 to 93 lbs. I have had issues with my mobility since I was young but nothing like this. The Mineral oil at night with Applesauce seems to be working but I am sick on the daily. I am better then I was and have gone up to 112lbs. The last thing I want is to have surgery. I have a wonderful well known GI who is also trying to keep from having surgery.
The Mineral oil with applesauce has very strict rules. You can only use under Doctors care. So do not do until you ralk with GI
Also I am on Doxycycline which is an antibiotic that helps with bacteria that helps keep the bacteria from your colon when waste sits in you intestines to long and causes severe gas.
Ongoing antibiotics is not good from what I understand. I try magnesium oxide to help keep things moving along. I think some of my digestive issues are not eating frequently enough. I tend to eat once a day then fall asleep. I suspect I should eat small amounts at intervals during the day to avoid the tired after effect. Digestive issues are familial for me so that's some of it too
You only take antibiotics as needeed when bacteria builds up. If your colon is dead you need to do whatn you can to get it moving. Look at this point nothing about this deasease is good or healthy. What ever works for you and you feel good keep it up.
