Slow transit constipation and surgery

Posted by januaryjane @januaryjane, Aug 22, 2019

Hi, I have slow transit constipation and Ive tried everything with little help. Amitiza, linzess, trulance...diet modification, pelvic floor therapy...etc. It affects the quality of my life every day. It started at 18 and im almost 34. I cannot maintain a job or even finish school. Just saw a new gastro and he wants me to "drag my feet" on surgery. I know it is not to be taken lightly but i want a life, while im rather young. Just really stressed and would like any thoughts or info that would help. Thanks.

Hi have you tried those medications with some over the counter laxatives like miralax or magnesium to help things get moving or seen a motility specialist. Maybe a specialist might have some ideas. I completely understand your frustration. I am on Motegrity and some over the counter laxatives. I am retired. I don’t think I could work with all this diarrhea. It’s been a life changing illness. Hang in there.

I have tried everything. the mineral oil for me is a lubricant that helps things slide out. I don't get diarrhea.

Yes my colon has no mobilty. We tried to see how things are moving and did the radioactive tracers. They did not move at all in 3 days. All 15 still in system and in same location. Trying to keep me from having colon removed.

Hello @sensationalsmilesinc and welcome to Mayo Connect. From your posts I see that you have struggled with slow constipation for some time, now. How long ago were you diagnosed with this?

Many of us with this problem have had surgeries of the digestive tract or diabetes. Was there a surgery or other health issue which caused this problem for you as well?
