How safe is valsartan?

Posted by chilindrina @chilindrina, Jun 12, 2023

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, was prescribed lisinopril only 5mg. I got a dry cough soon after I started taking it. Went to the saw the PA and she changed my medication to Valsartan 40mg. One of the side effects is that it can cause cancer.

It appears there was a concern about possible malignancies a decade ago. More studies were done and the FDA concluded there was no increased risk.

My sister is on one and I would take it if I was prescribed it.

You could talk to your pharmacist or go back to your provider and ask more questions.

Thank you very much for responding. I will ask my provider if I have more questions.

It also can cross react with lisinopril. Both have serious side effects like Angioedema (my pharmacist told me this). Ask your provider and pharmacist and do a computer search yourself.

All meds have potential side effects. Sometimes they happen, sometimes they don’t. If they happen, sometimes you can adjust to them, sometimes you can’t. You can research this stuff before you start a medication. Your provider, pharmacist, drug manufacturer materials are all good sources of information that can help you be aware of what to expect. Thankfully, if a medication doesn’t work out for you there are usually other options. You and your team can sort through the options to find what will be in your best interests.
