Osteoporosis quite severe if I started hrt now will it help . I am 74

Well it was odd , I felt completely weird and foggy in the head and very dizzy. The thing is hrt lowers the blood pressure and blood glucose which is good for someone who needs that but mine is ok . I don’t know how I will get on with just the utrogestan and a little testosterone as I haven’t begun that . Both of those hormones help to build bones but not as fast as estriadol. It’s all pretty scary isn’t it ?? I also have problems with lesions which are benign in my C1 , C2 and T3 joints and sacroiliac problems !!! My whole skeleton seems to have let me down which seems unfair as I haven’t begun exercised all my life up until 4 years ago and eat a very good diet . I am rather small boned though . I think at the moment I am living on a prayer !

After two and a half decades of unnecessary suffering I have finally been prescribed HRT at 66 for my osteoporosis - 25 years after menopause at 41. It was in fact a very senior cardiologist who first suggested HRT - which greatly relieved me given the many, largely overinflated risks, generated by misinterpretation of the data of the landmark Womens Health Initiative report 2002. This denied generations of women HRT . I have now been on bio- identical low dose estradiol and progesterone for 3 months. I found it instantly effective for all my estrogen deprived conditions - from anxiety and severe insomnia to over active bladder. And, based on the evidence, I fully expect to see a significant improvement of my osteoporosis within a year. I do appreciate there may be some risks - largely because initiating HRT over 65 has simply not been the subject of any research since the WHI. But HRT has so substantially increased my quality of life I believe it is worth any unknown risks. And given that biosphonates are the only alternative for osteoporosis and can only be taken short term, why wouldn't those of us over 65 opt for life long HRT instead? After all, I will count myself among the lucky few if l live beyond 85.

How wonderful that you found a gyno who 'gets' it! Is s/he by any chance in the Kansas City area? I am desperately searching for someone who is experienced in optimizing hormones for older ladies. I am 73. Or maybe he knows someone???

Thank you for the encouraging words, that gives me more confidence in going with BHRT. I refuse to take the osteo meds that are prescribed. It makes no sense to me to take a drug that is supposed to strengthen bones yet has the possibility to break bones or deteriorate my jaw and teeth. I will post my journey with BHRT when it begins.

I wish i could find a doctor who would prescribe bhrt. I'm 66 and have severe osteoporosis, esp in lumbar and hip neck., t score-3.3 & -2.5. Dr started me on eventity because I need to build bone, only had one set last month, it was not a good experience. She said to try it for 6 months, not sure if I can do that. All of these osteo meds have bad side effects, esp jaw decay and femur fractures and some cause strokes . I am petrified of continuing eventity. Also, once your on eventity for 12 months and then stop, you have to go on another med for life such as prolia or relcast which are dangerous. I hope you do well on hrt, amd wish you the best.

I've taken fosomax, forteo, evenity and now Prolia. I have not had noticeable side effects. Excellent outcome with evenity. Yes, we are all different and some do have side effects that lead them to different approaches to tackling osteoporosis. However, I think that we may be conjuring more fear of trying these potentially life saving drugs than necessary. It is useful to be cautious and do our own research, seek out providers who understand osteoporosis, the drugs available and their proper sequencing.

I was told mine was severe too but I won’t take the osteoporosis meds. Keep searching for a GYN or other Dr that will prescribe the BHRT if you want to try that route. It took years to get osteoporosis and it won’t be cured or build new bones overnight. The doctors are told what meds you prescribe without even doing tests to show why you’re loosing bone density. There are many reasons.
