When will my sense of taste and smell return?

I've had chemo and radiation for my throat cancer. It's been three weeks now since I've had my last treatments, and I'm wondering when anyone here started to have their taste and smell return.

As for me, my olfactory system became super sensitive and the smell of food made me vomit. Even bread toasting threw me for a loop. This continued throughout my 35 radiation, 3 chemo and a few months post treatment.
It was nearly a year before I could ingest food by mouth and then when I was able to eat I could only eat oatmeal 3 times per day for about a year.
As for taste, it probably was approximately the 8th month of oatmeal before I could actually taste it. When I did begin eating other foods they had a cardboard taste for several months. Now 8 1/2 years post treatments I pretty much taste things as before except for chocolate, chocolate taste good but nothing like I remember.
When I made my mind up to get my feeding tube removed my oncologist prescribed Marinol to boost my appetite; it didn’t work so I stopped taking it.
Probably not what you wanted to hear but keep in mind that everyone is different. Treatment react differently from person to person so all I can say is fight the good fight my friend!
