Posted by tgsmith @tgsmith, May 1 1:13pm

I’m receiving BCG treatment for a bladder cancer. I’m on my fourth week. Has anyone had pain after the treatment I have and it’s severe when I have to go to the bathroom please let me know.

Hi @tgsmith and welcome. I'm sorry you're having such pain urinating after BCG #4. It can be painful going the restroom after. My doctor prescribed some bladder numbing meds which does help. It's called Uribel, but there's also good ole Pyridium (aka AZO standard, OTC). Give your doc a quick call or inbox, I know they will gladly prescribe you a bladder numbing rx for some help/relief. BTW, I start taking mine the morning of my treatments. When I go to my appointment and they collect my urine sample, they know I've taken my Uribel ;)) GodBless

I had BCG treatments for bladder cancer about 25 years ago. No problems and no pain. I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty with the treatments.

I just finished my 6 week BCG. I had a good bit of pain urinating and lasted about 3-4 days, My doctor prescribed Phenazopydine. That really helped with the pain. You can also buy this drug OTC. A smaller dose but I take 2 pills a day for the pain. Several of the drug stores and some grocery stores carry AZO with Phenazopydine. I got mine at walmart. Now don't laugh but it turns your pee orange. That is normal. OK you can laugh, I laughed the first time I peed orange.

My pain is not burning. It is a sharp pain that radiates. What type of pain were you having?

Finished my six treatments last month and editing for the evaluation cystoscopy later this month. No pain during treatments. Some flu like symptoms after the fourth and fifth treatment but otherwise ok. I think you need to talk to your urologist.

The 1st was February 2024 I had a large tumor, went every 3 months for the scope in November, I had three spots they burned them off and February 2025. I had five more tumors started the treatment. I did my fifth treatment one to go and was told the scope would be 6 to 8 weeks after my last treatment, I am so ready to get it over with the pain has been excruciating the first day some of the second day.

I talked with the nurse who gives the treatments, all I get is the symptoms are to be expected and get worse towards the end

No, thankfully it did not. U did have one exam that showed a benign cyst and they just cauterized it.
Good luck, Fran.
