Sinusitis, Allergic Rhinitis & Asthmatic Bronchitis Ongoing
Precious Folks, I am going into my 3rd week of Sinus infection,
Allergic Rhinitis & Asthmatic Bronchitis. Pollen has been terrible here and upper respiratory infections are abundant right now.
I am on my 2nd round of antibiotics, prednisone, Nebulizer &
a new rescue inhaler & prescription cough syrup so I can sleep.
Staying hydrated. Taking Vitamin D, C & Zinc.
Running a cool mist humidifer. I have used NAC for a few days then switched to Guafenesin per doctor's suggestion.
I irrigate sinus with saline and prescription solution x2 daily, constant drainage and sinus headache. Still blowing out green and it's thick and a lot of mucus.
Still coughing up green from asthmatic bronchitis and wheezing.
No pneumonia per my 2nd visit this past week (most grateful).
I was given a methylprednisilone injection this past Thursday which helped open up my lungs. I don't like being on this many steroids.
More prone to a flareup (not quite like this one!) since having COVID.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. God Bless You All!

Good I.D.
I had the exact same thing you are experiencing last year. I came down with COVID for first time even after gettng all shots and boosters.
I thought I had a sinus infection so went to walk in clinic. They found me positive to COVID and put me on Paxicil (spell) but did not address my sinus infection. I go to Mayo Jacksonville and when my PCP there got notice I was on the Paxcil he called me at home and said not to take as it interferred with other medications I was taking.
I was in Misery and thought was getting better when my sinus infection got worse and had the same green scabs and mucous come out. Got put on antibiotic and prednizone. Got a little better but infection moved into my bronchial tubes and infection there with coughing up green scabs and mucus.
Then put on higher and different type of antibiotic, cough suppresant, etc. My throat was so sore I ate soft ice cream. I was now on my third week of antibiotics but the last prescription seemed to be working.
So what can I add that I did that can help. Sadly time. If you are not on a high dose antibiotic that specfically treats bronchial and sinus infection asked for one. I wish I had the name of the drug I was on but I know they were horse pill size and took twice a day for 2 weeks.
Keep doing the nasal rinses as they do help clear sinuses. Were you tested again to make sure you don't have COVID again? You mentioned rescue inhaler. Did they prescribe Advair type inhaler to take each day. Getting a steroid down into your bronchial area is what helped me. I wanted to be put back on prednizone but they would not do it after a 2 week treatment.
It took about 3 months for me to beat the virus and infections it caused. It took another 3 months to return to normal. I know that is not comfronting to hear but what I am passing on is my did get better week after week.
I know not much help to you but I can really emphasize with you as had same thing.
JC76, This is not COVID. It's the crud that is going around now that attacks the upper respiratory. I'm allergic to Advair, but am trying a new inhaler called AirSupra (works differently) along with the Nebulizer, Z-Pac & prednisone & sinus irrigation solution. I had something similar to these 2 summers ago and it lasted 3 months, but, I had pneumonia with it too. So grateful I do not have pneumonia this time.
You are so correct in keeping the lungs opened up.
Praying to sleep due to the coughing, wheezing, excessive mucus and headache from sinus pressure. Sleep helps so much.
I have a feeling you were on Augmentin 875 mg...big white horse tablets twice a day. They did not work and now I am on Z-Pac.
Thank you very much for your kind works. God Bless you. Blessings....
@covidstinks2023
AirSupra? Is it working and can you share how it is different?
Not sure where you live but I live in Florida. The primary tree in Florida is pine trees. My PCP says he believes I am allergic to pine pollen. It covers our mailboxes and cars with green dust.
Now my PCP says Mayo does not test for pine allergies when they do prick test and or blood test.
I have found sleeping with my head up and slightly down so mucus flows out nose and not down back of throat helps as it stops the coughing. I think you are right about Augmentin they were huge and twice a day. I think I was on the Z pac first then the Augmentin.
Hope you feel better. I have never had pneumonia but if anything like bronchial infections it is miserable.
jc76, Presently I am on a Nebulizer using Albuterol primarily. The Airsupra is more of a
maintenance rescue inhaler with albuterol and budesonide, a steroid, and is used for quick
relief. So far so good. It opens up my lungs quickly. Advair gave me bad headaches. Advair has Flovent, a steroid with salmeterol and is used as a maintenance inhaler to control asthma and prevent asthma attacks. The downside of steroid inhalers is it can give you thrush (candida yeast) in your mouth, so you have to watch out for that when you use them. Make
sure you rinse your mouth out very well after each use or you can easily get thrush.
The doctor told me that we would not get relief until May from the pollen. This has been the worst spring for tree pollens. Right now it is the oak pollen that is high.
I sleep on 2 pillows at night as well to keep my head elevated.
Pneumonia made me feel like I was breathing through a straw and I could
not take deep breaths without chest pain. It is so tiring and takes a long time to get over.
Praying for you & yours. Blessings to you & your family.
Hi,
Wow, you are going through a lot! That must be so uncomfortable and irritating. I'm sorry for you. I have a few suggestions. I have a very sensitive nose and use Mupirocin ointment when it gets infected. It works great but it has to be prescribed. However, before I got that medication, I would put an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin in my nose when it flared up and that helped too. Be careful taking Prednisone. It has strong bad side effects. Read the label. Both my husband with lung cancer and my mom with emphysema took that and reacted badly to it so they quit taking it.
One thing that works really good is prayer. Just ask God for help and you will get it. Sometimes it may take longer than you like, but just keep praying. God will be there for you. I'll say a prayer for you too.
I wish you the best.
PML
pml, Thank you so much. I am a born again Christian and prayer is high on my list with my Lord and for myself and others on here. I so appreciate your encouraging words and I am praying for you as well.
I have had to take short prednisone tapers off and on for upper respiratory issues and I understand the benefits and the downside. I do well on them.
I have never had my nose to get infected inside, but, I will keep that in mind about the Mupirocin ointment.
Blessings & Prayers to you & yours....
It sounds miserable! I’ve had my share of sinus issues and sympathize. One question-did they do cultures on nasal swab or sputum to assure you’re on correct antibiotic?
My pulmonologist at Mayo is a huge fan of AirSupra. She has had me replace Albuterol inhaler with AirSupra when I’m sick. It works great. I still do Albuterol nebulizer. I am also on Budesonide. To add: I’ve had sinus surgery and use Muciprocin for the inside of my nose. ENT said other gels like neosporin or Vaseline are bad. Ayr is okay though.
jwool89, I pray you heal well from your sinus surgery. I had sinus surgery in 1994 and it has served me well. Since COVID I am more prone to sinus infections AND our seasons have
more pollen it seems every year. I use Ayr as well.
I am liking the AirSupra and I use the Albuterol nebulizer as well.
God Bless you greatly.
pacathy, My old ENT doctor (he has since passed away) would culture my nose when I was not responding to antibiotics for a 3 month long sinus infection. I had 3 types of bacteria growing
in my sinuses. I worked in the medical field at that time and was catching everything that
came in the health center. He ended up putting me on Clindamycin and it knocked it out.
Blessings & Prayers....
