After Evenity

Posted by pami @pami, Jan 26 10:21pm

I will have my last injection of Evenity in two weeks. I don't want to have a Reclast infusion because I have had up to 5 in the past. I am concerned about starting Prolia for the remainder of my life. I am 70. I am considering Forteo because my insurance will pay for that rather than Tymlos. Any suggestions? I can't take bisphosphates. They wreck havoc on my stomach.

It may pay in the future when more studies are done showing a need for it between Prolia shots. That is what my doctor also thought.

@naturegirl5; @gravity3. Not sure which one of you posted this comment but it was very helpful to me. Thank you. I just started Evenity (one dose-no side effects) and plan to take 12. My rheumatology doctor suggested Prolia afterwards: I did not want Prolia for many reasons (probably known here) so I suggested Recast because I had a friend who took it also without issues and it helped. He agreed with Reclast (this would be after checking my Dexa to see if the Evenity worked of course and if it did, then Reclast). He said I could go on Reclast and after some (2-3) injections then take a holiday (not sure how long but presumably checking Dexa for progress after the last Reclast. So I am okay with that and am happy to see that at least one other person on this forum seems to be going down a similar path. I will post my progress as I go along to see if I can help any others.

Hi clj9821: Do you know how long after you finish Evenity you will start the recast and how many recast injections you will have? Thank you

I have one Evenity shot left at the end of May and then a dexa scan is ordered. Dr has said she wants reclast next and not Prolia. Does anyone know why? I’m thinking she has Prolia planned down the road after the reclast limit…..what are the time limits for these meds? I was told only 5 years for Prolia but I have friends that have been on it for years!! Any info appreciated…

I would like to know that myself. I am taking Eventiy now (3 shots in) and plan to start Reclast after. I also would be curious as to how long people are taking Reclast. Thank you

deborahia, your question is lingering out here without and answer. You probably already know the answer. But Most people take two years of Reclast which is two injections. You can begin Reclast immediately at the end of the month of Evenity. Some physicians think it is better to wait a month or two, the idea being that Reclast will work better after the restoration of osteoclasts. The concept doesn't seem sensible to me, but they may know lots of things that I don't.
Some people only take one infusion of Reclast as the medication is believed to be effective for two years.

janeted, I'm hoping that your doctor doesn't use Prolia.
Studies have shown that
if you don't strike the Prolia hazards osteonecrosis, of the bone or atypical femur fractures, and if you don't need dental surgery during Prolia treatment, and don't have devastating side effect,
Prolia is safe and effective for 8 to 10 years.
The time of safety keeps expanding because the study has only been active for 10 years.

Actually I did not know the course of Reclast, so thank you for the answer. I will ask my rheum next week when I see him why he feels (if he does) that it is better to wait a month or two. (and post if I feel it will be helpful) Now I wonder, what happens after Reclast????

hi, I'm always thinking of the way to get back to the drugs that build the best bone. The pth drugs Forteo and Tymlos. They are also most effective in the femur and the spine.
I have the same sense of Prolia that you have. There is no other osteoporosis drug that will leave your bones weaker than they'd be if you'd never taken it. It has to be followed by Reclast, if you stop. Osteonecrosis isn't a rare disease that some people with genetic disposition get. It happens because the bone built by antiresorptives is bone with low blood and nerve supply. If you get an infection it is difficult to even get antibiotics to the infection. The bone becomes necrotic.
It is surprising that the Vanderbilt rheumatologist isn't offering you choice.
I would follow Reclast with Tymlos or Forteo.
How did you fare with Evenity. Will you have dxa results.

I have had 3 doses of Evenity, no problems. I have a dexa in Nov 2025.
