What alternative milks work for you?

Posted by januaryjane @januaryjane, 2 days ago

I've always loved milk but within the past six years have become lactose intolerant.
I can eat ice cream and cheese but very small portions. My gut gives me grief with sour cream, yogurt and cream cheese. So I can't eat yogurt for the good probiotics!! (I loved my greek)

Recently I bought some almond milk with less sugar. (Tried to find organic but couldn't)
It was great, I had a small cup with breakfast two mornings in a row. Then my stomach turned on me.

Don't know if I'll ever be able to stomach even milk alternatives. Used to drink soy a long time ago but that eventually got to me.
Haven't tried others but I know a few are high in Fodmaps.
Has anybody had luck with any milk alternative, specifically?
I deal with ibs, gerd and motility issues.

I have not tried those other milks yet. I've seen many gastros without much help. I have an appointment in a few months with a new one. Have not done the dietician, insurance won't cover and I do all my own research anyway. I know I do not have ibd or celiac from scopes. I try to follow low format diet along with anti inflammatory and Mediterranean.
I have had allergy testing but not to food, environmental.

I have IBS-D and also dairy intolerant. I can have milk products if baked in something but can't drink milk or eat yogurt. I have been drinking soy milk for years and before that rice milk. I also drink oat milk which to me tastes better then almond milk. Maybe you should have a work up with a gastro. I also have to go along with the FodMap diet. Ever since I was a kid I knew certain fruits and dairy products bothered my gut.

Have not found a gastroenterologist who was ever really helpful. But have tried many throughout the years.

Depending on where you’re located: my wife is lactose intolerant so we drink DariGold Fit, this is ultra filtered, way less sugar and nearly double the protein than regular milk. Our other milk of choice is Fairlife; this is by the Coca Cola company and is like DariGold but has 1 less gram of protein and is more money per volume.
Fairlife is available everywhere (I think?) whereas DariGold is not.
If you like chocolate milk, I doubt you will find a better one than Fairlife and DariGold runs a close second.
Both choices are certainly more $ than regular milk but we never have any waste and the expiration date is WAY longer on these two products than the regular.
Both are available in whole and 2%.

I forgot to add: both products are Lactose free!

I used rice milk for many years until I became allergic to it also. Have you ever tried coconut milk yogurt? It’s high in fat, but it’s supposed to be a healthy fat. I ate it for years, but now my stomach is worse and it bothers me. It’s delicious!

Been lactose intolerant for
30+ years. Almond, cashew,
Or oat for beverages. Same is true for ice cream. As a whole, a very small part/concern in my diet. Move on to other beverages.
Do not let lactose control your life/ decision making.
