I am new to Fosamax and looking for Eperiences & Comments

Posted by hips4me @hips4me, Apr 13 3:23pm

I am a 70 year old Male who was just diagnosed with Osteoporosis. I was prescribed Fosamax and have started taking it. Of course I have questions and also looking for what experience others have had with this drug. Does it work? How long until one sees results? Any experiences with side effects?

Thanks for your feed back in advance. at 70

I just got my c-telopeptide, beta xlink serum test and the result appears to be therapeutic. I think that is a better indicator than the Dexa scan

Thanks for the insights so far. Seems like Fosamax/Alendronate is the initial choice of most doctors regardless of whether the patient is male or female.

It is more likely that Fosomax is the initial choice of meds because of insurance requirements and because most primary care doctors need better and more up-to-date training about osteroporosis.

I have been taking g it for about 18 months. Hadn’t improved anything but has maintained
Also, no side effects
Think dr would do that “vacation” period I’ve read about, but I recently had minor accident and fractured four ribs
So, just had extra De a and see Dr in a week

I would have started with Tymlos or Forteo, not Fosamax. That is the more effective approach from everything I've read.

You’d start with those but not evenity? Just wondering?

I forgot about Evenity. It works a little differently. Also, Tymlos is better for spine; Evenity, for hip.

This discussion from last year talked about the two:

I believe it's now accepted that an anabolic followed by an antiresorptive is the preferred approach.

This video is a good layman's version of the options (and the person who made it has posted here in the past):

I am a 66-year-old man who started this process at 65., so not too different than the OP. Tymlos has worked really well for me. When I'm done with it, I'll have to go on either Fosamax or Reclast.
