Any suggestions for going lactose free?

Posted by sandyabbey @sandyabbey, Dec 17, 2018

@gut health. Does anyone know of a lactose free yogurt. I’m just coming off vancomycin from my 3 reoccurrence of Cdiff. Flagyl didn’t work for mw so I’m hoping the vancomycin will. I’m 5 days out & just one loose stool each morning. I feel like I need some good yogurt. I’m having to eat a soft diet in order not to feel too full & let my gut heal. I lost 20 pounds in a month. I’m down to 85 pounds. I can’t afford much more weight loss. Any advice appreciated.

@catstx I have been lactose intolerant for about 2 years or so. I never found Lactaid tablets to help but I have gotten some help from Digestive Advantage, Lactose Defense formula. Even with that though I could not have things that @astaingegerdm mentions, like regular ice cream and pizza.

I also have no trouble with any aged cheeses, they only have a very small trace of lactose in them, it drops out in aging. The lactose is actually in the whey. Just remember though, if you eat a lot of anything that has a non-measurable trace, those traces can add up and cause a problem. As I said above, I cannot eat regular pizza so I have taken to making my own and I use provolone cheese. We actually like it more than we like it with mozzarella, it's more flavorful. There is also a pizza with no cheese, Amy's vegetable pizza. I have purchased that too and added my own aged cheese before baking.
As mentioned, Whole Foods does have some good lactose free dairy products under the name of Green Valley. There is also a yogurt brand that used to be carried by a store around here. It was Good Belly I believe.

I have changed to Fairlife milk. It's free of lactose, has high calcium, and high protein! It tastes good too.

The thing I miss most is Caprese salads, they of course have fresh mozzarella in them. I also miss Italian foods that have ricotta, like lasagna.

Thanks for the reference to Fairlife. Didn’t know about it will take a trip to Walmart to buy some.

I've always loved milk but within the past six years have become lactose intolerant.
I can eat ice cream and cheese but very small portions. My gut gives me grief with sour cream, yogurt and cream cheese. So I can't eat yogurt for the good probiotics!! (I loved my greek)

Recently I bought some almond milk with less sugar. (Tried to find organic but couldn't)
It was great, I had a small cup with breakfast two mornings in a row. Then my stomach turned on me.

Don't know if I'll ever be able to stomach even milk alternatives. Used to drink soy a long time ago but that eventually got to me.
Haven't tried others but I know a few are high in Fodmaps.
Has anybody had luck with any milk alternative, specifically?
I deal with ibs, gerd and motility issues.

Depending on where you’re located: my wife is lactose intolerant so we drink DariGold Fit, this is ultra filtered, way less sugar and nearly double the protein than regular milk. Our other milk of choice is Fairlife; this is by the Coca Cola company and is like DariGold but has 1 less gram of protein and is more money per volume.
Fairlife is available everywhere (I think?) whereas DariGold is not.
If you like chocolate milk, I doubt you will find a better one than Fairlife and DariGold runs a close second.
Both choices are certainly more $ than regular milk but we never have any waste and the expiration date is WAY longer on these two products than the regular.
Both are available in whole and 2%.

I used rice milk for many years until I became allergic to it also. Have you ever tried coconut milk yogurt? It’s high in fat, but it’s supposed to be a healthy fat. I ate it for years, but now my stomach is worse and it bothers me. It’s delicious!

I have IBS-D and also dairy intolerant. I can have milk products if baked in something but can't drink milk or eat yogurt. I have been drinking soy milk for years and before that rice milk. I also drink oat milk which to me tastes better then almond milk. Maybe you should have a work up with a gastro. I also have to go along with the FodMap diet. Ever since I was a kid I knew certain fruits and dairy products bothered my gut.
