3 cm liver lesion: I'm beyond terrified

Posted by sonyahamel @sonyahamel, Apr 29, 2023

A 3cm lesion was found on my liver during a ct angiogram. I am beyond terrified! It was suggested I go for a ct scan of my liver. I am close to canceling it.

I am in the same boat they found a 3.6 cm mass on my liver I am freaking out never had 1 symptom.
also they could not tell me much until I have a mri with contrast I am scared this is what they said after CT scan without contrast
Nodular cirrhotic appearance of the liver with ill-defined hypodense mass in the right hepatic lobe
measuring up to 3.6 cm; recommend MRI abdomen with and without contrast for further evaluation.

@phyzman: so sorry you learned your scan results show liver irregularities. It is human to feel this anxiety now. You can research “Liver” in Mayo Connect “search” to review the many posts from our peers who discovered liver cancer. This info will answer many of your questions.
You are not alone! Many of us are living with liver metastases stemming from cancer in other organs. My best thoughts are with you.

Most of these findings are incidental and benign. Request feedback from your
doctor and finish the testing.

Hi @sonyahamel, sorry to hear you feel your world has been turned upsidedown by this newly discovered liver lesion. I understand how scary that is, but why would you cancel your CT scan? It's always better to know what it is. Maybe it's nothing significant and you just go back to your normal life. Benign liver lesions are extremely common and we are often even born with them. Maybe it's something that needs to be addressed and then the sooner the better while it's relatively small. I have many liver lesions they believe are all cysts. Some are 1 cm+. The first one was an incidental finding 22 years ago when I had a kidney stone. They told me a huge percentage of the population has benign liver cysts. I have breast and neuroendocrine cancer, but no one believes my liver cysts are related and many, many radiologists and oncologists have looked at my scans over the decades. Good luck with your scan. I hope it turns out to be benign and that you never have to worry about it again.

I've had so many CTs in the past 25 years. They are very quick and easy tests so don't worry about the test at all. It's just like a super xray.

Good morning, I was just told that I have 2 lesions on my liver. I suffer from extreme anxiety and I am not functioning well at the moment- so scared. I am waiting for my CT scan - who knows when I will get that.

Hi, @tyredone63 - getting news of a lesion or suspicious finding can be nerve wracking. Sorry you are feeling so scared.

Have you already had your CT scan and you are waiting for the results, or you are waiting for an appointment to have a CT scan?

Hello. Please don’t be afraid. There is always the possibility that this is just a cyst. Many of us have them and they are not harmful. As the previous comment stated, it is better to know and treat appropriately now rather than later if it does turn out to be something more serious. It is more manageable and less stressful when caught early. Wishing you the very best and sending a dose of courage to help you through.

Just the idea of knowing would be better than not knowing. The not knowing would always be there. and would mentally not be good. I’d rather know and you can take it from there. It’d sure be less stressful. I hope you get the CT scan for your own peace. Good luck and hoping for the best.
