Teriparitide - ugly fatigue & headache. Need ideas, please!

Posted by pjwesty @pjwesty, Apr 13 5:16pm

Hello! I am about a month in with teriparitide and I want it so much to work for me. I take the injection between 8:30-9:00 AM and around 11:00 or so the headache, fatigue and fog knock me out. I have never been a napper and I sleep solid for 45-60 minutes. When I wake up I am a foggy mess until 4-5 PM. The day is wasted. I plan on reaching out to my endo, but to be honest, he’ll again say, “If it continues, stop taking it and go to the ER”. I’ve read about injecting every other day for a week or two or stopping for a week and starting back. Is that something that works? FYI: I hydrate like crazy, take 1000 Vitamin D and eat plenty of calcium rich foods. Spine -4.2, femoral hips -3.5. Multiple fractures. Thank you so much for any advice you can offer

Thank you for taking the time to offer your advice. What is the next step if calcium is high?

When I experienced the high calcium, my endo stopped the treatment.
Besides the extreme fatigue I was also experiencing racing heart and chest pain after each injection from day one.
Had a stress test with my cardiologist who cleared me to continue taking the med, but once my calcium was found to be so high, I was taken off.
My endo never recommended every other day injections or anything, she just stopped the meds.
In my opinion treatment for osteoporosis has to be personalized, as we are all so different. What works for one may not work the same for another.
It’s a tough journey to say the least.
Hopefully you will find a way around this current issue.

I am also on Teriparatide and highly recommend you take it at night before bed. I also got headaches the first few months, but luckily I am experienced with migraines and had migraine medication on hand. I am 6 months in now, and no side effects. Headache only if I try drinking wine, which does not seem to go well with the Teriparatide. Darn.

Thank you! I agree with your wine comment. Same here & well, darn!

I’m so sorry! What time do you take it in the morning? Sounds similar to my situation - headaches have no pattern, but the fatigue lays me out about 2 hours after injection. If you want, I can keep you posted on my night injections. So far so good - but it’s only my second night

Yes please! Keep me informed. I also do glaucoma drops in am and abx for my MCAS (for 3 weeks am and pm. I’m trying to space everything out without interactions.

Yes. It can be out of the fridge for up to 36 hours. See in the manufacturer’s website:

“FORTEO can stay at room temperature for a total of 36 hours per device”
https://forteo.lilly.com/taking-forteo
I did the same thing once and looked it up.

Situation worse now. Pharmacy never ordered the new teriparitide! Threw out the old as I was expecting new today. Long weekend. None for 3-4 days. I had a terrible day over this negligence!

I did not know that. I stressed through a vacation with my somewhat useless cooling travel case, but will ease off my travel stress knowing this.

The Forteo you've taken has already stimulated cells you need to build bone. You won't lose much in these three to four days plus you'll feel good and that might help your reaction to the next injection. Forteo isn't like the newer medications that start reversal when a few days are missed.
