Posted by allmanbrothered @allmanbrothered, Apr 2 6:11pm

I have been having trouble digesting my food I hear it gurgling in my stomach. I have trouble going to the bathroom . Had scope they say it may be Barretts esophagus. Can Coffee cause this. It causes me to have a hard time swallowing and cough up some phlegm at times. Any help would be appreciated

Carbonated beverages, alcohol bother me. If you have taken many antacids, like Pepcid, they may have aggravated your esophagus, and your stomach. Barretts is related to acid reflux coming from the stomach and pepcid is not the best medicine even if it helps. If you change your antacid and see a GI specialist, maybe you can control the Gerd and mitigate having Barretts. Try Gaviscon(omeprazole)for reflux. Better for stomach too.Pepcid and other ppis aso have been said to increase the chance of stomach polyps(painless). Coffee may not be the best to drink. Try herbal teas.

Coffee was bothering me but once I bought low acid coffee at traders Joe and HEB has low acidity coffee too. Not sure why but if I buy brewed coffee at coffee shops. I have no issues. Must be how it is brewed. Strange but true.
I found any type of tomato sauces, chocolate, sodas, causes flare ups. For the flare ups I suck on manuka honey drops.

I just checked out manuka honey drops. I think that's just what the dr ordered . lol
My throat gets so dry and I get a cough. I drink water but it doesn't usually help. I don't like any pukalytics drops. I put them in my mouth and spit them out in a minute. I do have Gerd and take Nexium 40 for it first thing in the am. Wait 45-60 minutes and then take other rxs. And eat.If I can. I have Crohn's and waiting for surgery asap. I was allergic to Skyrizi and was on No medicine for a few months. Flare put me in the hospital. We got it under control and the surgeon did not want to do it as an emergency. It's like walking on egg shells trying to figure out what I can eat that won't get stuck in the stricture.

I can’t remember exactly how long I had Gerd before my diagnosis, maybe 2 years? My doctor who did my colonoscopy also did my endoscopy. She diagnosed my Barretts, after a couple years the tissue from my esophagus connecting to my stomach was turning brown in color which was a sign it could turn to cancer. She had recommended me to a specialist for 4 RFA’s (radio frequency ablations) that basically does away with the brown tissue and kills it so pink new tissue can grow back. The RFA’s were spaced apart like 6mos apart if I remember correctly? So the new tissue could come back. Hopefully you can understand this stuff. Best of luck !!🙏

Thank you so much. Did the treatment for the 4 RFA'S work for you ? My situation seems just like yours as far as the GERD not sure how long I had it before the determination like you I think about 2 years . Thanks

The RFA’s basically restored the damaged tissue. I’m on a daily dose of 40mg of Omeprazole every morning once a day now. I can still get Gerd if I go to bed on a full stomach and sleep on my side for some reason so I always try and eat 2-3hrs before bedtime. If I miss taking my Omeprazole I feel acid reflux coming during the day depending on what I eat or drink. I get scoped every other year and so far so good. Luckily nothing serious has come back. 🙏 Best of luck to you! Oh and usually when you get a Endoscopy they take pictures that will show the brown tissue that could possibly become cancerous. That’s why my doctor recommended the RFA’s

I have Barrettes esophagus, I take 40 mg of Omeprazole 30 minutes before eating in the morning, stopped drinking coffee, only have 1 cup of decaf, and drink herbal teas, had headaches for a couple of days after stopping caffeine, eat a plant based diet, and stick to the diet plan my GI Dr gave me and saw a nutritionist. Works for me.
