Rezum for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
I am 66 years old and have been diagnosed with BPH. I tried Alfuzosin unsuccessfully. My urologist recommended Urolift, but I have concerns about the procedure. Previously he had mentioned Rezum for prostates between 30 and 90 ml. Mine is 28 ml and he did not think this would be a problem. He is a younger doctor and this is a relatively new procedure. I expressed concern that since the procedure kills cells with steam would there be a danger of damaging the urethra, too much prostate, or the outer cover of the prostate. He said this would not happen. I have looked on line for resources that address this issue without success. Any assistance getting assurance that the doctor is correct is appreciated.

My advice from dealing with the same problem, but as yet not having any procedures done is not to rush into any one procedure that a particular doctor is recommending. A nationally known hospital type clinic like Mayo for example may have a team of doctors who specialize in a particular health problem and can diagnose each patient's unique medical condition and life situation to best come to a joint recommendation for you. But I'd certainly see more than one doctor and do a lot of research into a medical problem before ever making a decision of how to proceed, especially if it involves any surgery. Of course some conditions are life threatening and you don't have the luxury of taking your time to make a more informed decision. Currently I need to urinate every 3 hours at night and since the daytime flow rate is quite adequate, it's more of just a night time problem that I've decided to live with. I agree with you that we need the results of hundreds of a procedure's short and long term effectiveness reported by hundreds of patients to help us choose doctors and procedures.
Why did you need Rezum after having TURP? TURP should be the final answer, no?
I was battling BPH since I was 40. Local doc said I was 10 years younger than almost all of them. My prostate got bigger and bigger. At the age of 62 I finally went to Mayo. I read up on the TURP and the other things but decided on the REZUM because it had the lowest chance of side effects. The steam ball is contained within the prostatic capsule, the urethra is only traversed to gain entry to the sidewalls (just beyond) and the steam ball is kept away from the ejaculatory ducts. I had the procedure but doc had to give me ten shots of steam because my gland was over 100 cc/ml. Wore catheter for a few days, not pleasant but I've had worse. In the first few months maybe some improvement but now 3 years later just as bad or worse. No leaking, no problems with fruition, just got to get up 3 times a night to urinate. Now considering what to do, HOLEP?

First, sorry your nightmare came back and I hope today finds you well.
I too started BPH symptoms early (36) by 50 I had total blockage. Retrograde from meds , 3 times a night would’ve been nice. I went 3 times an hour most times for measly drops that took 10-15 minutes. There were many nights I spent more times sitting on my toilet because I was too tired to stand. Then I did in my own bedroom. I’m going on day 71 since my HOLEP. I’ve had absolutely no issues whatsoever. Everything is back to normal and I mean everything. I live with this nightmare for over 10 years but the aggressive stage for the last six. I saw a Dr. in Boise, Idaho.
I had REZUM and had no benefit. I decided I wanted HoLEP, but my urologist just did TURP and REZUM. I found a Urologist who does HoLEP and on the first appointment he said He wouldn't have guessed I had had REZUM if I hadn't told him. I had the HoLEP two weeks ago and the improvements are starting to appear. The stream is stronger and contains more volume. The Overactive Bladder is slowly going away. Blood and small clots appeared in the urine for about a week and are now gone. I'm happy and look forward to continuing improvements.
My surgery was in the mid afternoon. And before five in the morning, the next day, my catheter was being removed, and I was able to go on my own.
Immediately after discharging from the hospital, I stated a nearby motel and took ibuprofen for a week then flew back home. Everything has been normal ever since. The only thing I experience was uncomfortable stinging when I went to the bathroom as the days and weeks went on it was less and less until it just went away. Currently I just have a numbness that comes and goes, but that’s it. No side effects as with most patients.
I am glad for you! Any noticeable changes in potency or RE, or maybe too early to tell?
I say this humbly. Everything works like it did or better now. I had no post op losses
