Core biopsy from mass on right lateral neck

Posted by amdabrock1 @amdabrock1, Apr 12 12:18pm

I have a tissue exam report from a mass on right lateral neck. I'm expecting a cancer diagnosis. Can a determination be made from tissue sample and pet scan, or is more information needed and what is the produre?

Those tests will be able to detect whether it is cancer or not. Somewhere along the line you will get CT scans too. I imagine they will scan most of your body to determine if the cancer is isolated . You will receive a lot of blood tests as well. Your doctors should cover all the treatment options. Once you know what it is, read as much as you can about it and ask lots of questions. This is a great forum for engagement and encouragement.

I have had a recall after the 4th check ultrasound.
2 x lymphs and 1 area 19mm x 9mm shows calcification macro.
I have had first a CT SCAN with iodine, a PET Scan rather than a RA Scan with iodine ..? from Australia - arrived via plane to Wellington - Auckland - Whangarei. Delayed by 2 hours due to fog! Radio Active for 2 hours after.
Then MRI of Pituritiary Gland (Brain).
Then another CT Scan with constrast - Iodine
Next month another CT Scan with Iodine
MRI shows no cancer.
Both CT Scans are inconclusive as this is a new area - not ultrasounded or scanned prior.
Areas that absorb iodine are more likely to be cancerous. But do not show warmth only pituitary gland.
But you have had a biopsy. First was a biopsy to my thyroid which proved papillary cancer. I had a thyroidectomy in Feb 2020.
That's good that the medical team are carefully investigating your case.

First off not a doctor but I assume you have a swollen lymph node on your neck? I had a swollen lymph node come up. Doctor ordered neck ultrasound. He saw something then ordered neck cable biospy of lymph node. HPV 16 SCC cancer was found. ENT found source of cancer in a tumor at base of tongue. Doctor ordered a PET scan to confirm the only place was at Base of tongue and Neck that had SCC. I have heard SCC travels normally to the nearest lymph nodes. There is also a NavDax blood test that can detect HPV-driven blood cancer. That is just another tool in the toolbox to detect cancer. The good news is if indeed HPV 16 it is very treatable with excellent success rates. Trust in your faith. God Speed to you.

The scenario you described is pretty much identical to my situation. Swollen lymph node, ultrasound confirmed several swollen nodes clumped on right side. 2 months later got CT with contrast. CT showed necrotic tissue in nodes. PCP ordered urgent biopsy and scope exam. ENT doctor confirmed tumor in right side of base of the tongue/tonsil and biopsy confirmed HPV 16 SCC, PET scan followed with no metastatic disease beyond throat area. Waiting for consultations with chemo and radio therapy oncologists for treatment plan. Trust in yourself and your doctors. They will get you through this.

@amdabrock1, any update? What did the diagnostic tests rule out or confirm?

The biopsy on my neck came back positive for Keratin and CAM 5.2. I was sent for a pet scan because a small spot on my lung was detected. The scan revealed 8-10 places where cancer was definite in the soft tissue. behind my hips, spine adrenal gland, shoulders collarbone, neck and head. I have to see oncology Monday. doesn't seem to be much urgency. What is strange Is they don't know where it started.

I did address your question, but not as a direct reply I'm not too good with computers.

Eighteen years ago, I felt a pea-sized lump in my neck that the doctor couldn't detect, so he put me on anti-biotics. After two weeks, I was sent to an ENT, who did a needle biopsy from the offending lymph node which had increase in size, extracting substantial fluid that came back positive for basil cell carcinoma. Scoping the throat revealed a small tumor on the base of my tongue. A PET scan showed lymph nodes on both sides of my throat were cancerous. A second scan after radiation and surgery still showed some cancer remained, so surgery was scheduled, which occurred 3 months after I had completed my radiation treatment. There was no cancer present at that time. I can only assume the radiation was still having an effect during the interim. I know they have come a long way since then, so hopefully you will get a quick resolution. Good luck!
