Spotting Following Cortisone Injection

Posted by toromama @toromama, Feb 19, 2021

Anyone else experienced spotting following a cortisone injection? This is my second experience. Both times it started about 10 days after the injection. Just wondering how long it usually lasts. The first time was a number of years ago and I thought it only lasted a few hours. I'm now on Day 2. I'm 61 years old and went through menopause when I was 52.

Got COVID 4 days after shots this last time & bleeding started 10 days after shots. Not stopped yet & on 10th day. Can’t see GYN for another 2 weeks.

So glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing these symptoms of a cortisone shot, and would be nice to have been warned by the doctor.

Yes it is quite common these days but not a lot of dr aware of it because more woman are getting steroid shots now than before .I am77 years old and I get lumbar steroid shots about every 5months . Apparently , the steroid thins out our skin and for some reason it thins out the uterus to causing bleeding .I have had all the tests including a D&C ,cat scan , multiple ultra sounds and just the last time i had a Biopsy and all clear .
So what my gynecologist did was put my on an estrogen vaginal cream every day for two weeks until i have the next shot and then twice a week after the shot hoping to counteract the bleeding . I think that if this doesn’t work i may rethink getting the shot as iam not crazy about taking estrogen all the time . Hope this helps

Im 61 and had I known this before, I would never have gotten that cortisone shot in my hip, to which the relief was so short lived, about 2 weeks, then another week goes by and Im having a cycle, I do a lot of my own research, Im never an anomaly but odd things do happen. My Dr. led me to an ultrasound, which led me to a future referral to a Gynecologist. Because I had a low dose of HRT .25 patch that I quit using a month before the cortisone. Uterine cancer and all.
She also had never heard of this, I knew that was coming as I suggested the information from my reading. It would have been great had the orthopedics office when giving me that shot warned me it was a possibility. I got no warning of any kind. Im on Day 6 it has been slow and manageable but Im reading some lasting 20 days, is that right, possible or normal? What is wrong in the medical field that physicians dont have conversations between them anymore. Providers are so concerned with the 15 minute time limit they are given, Im rushed out the door before my questions are answered. I am hypothyroid and my levels escalated as well, so of course medication comes into play, lets increase the dose. Do more blood work in 4 weeks, "because that's what we are allowed". I have rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis as well, hence the hip shot, they have to try that first. I am absolutely fed up with this. Here I was enjoying the last 5 years without having to purchase a product.

Wow ! , I get it ,your right ,why don't the medical system know about this . I am 77 years old and I have a few of your health issues as well and just debating whether it’s worth getting the shot or not again after four shots already . For me ,I get a couple of months of relief which was wonderful, so as long as the bleeding doesn't get worse than it has been i may get it again . I am on an estrogen pellet (suppository) which isn't too bad as a precaution but I am also Leary of the blood clots and cancer so would like to eliminate taking it . It’s hard to know what the best thing to do is ? Thanks for your help ! Cheers v

Thank you so much for sharing this. Just went to orthopedic doc due to collar bone pain. A PA student diagnosed me with a rotator cuff tear. The PA then said we can give you a cortisone shot now. I replied I needed to do some research first. So I got a pair of eye rolls and left. Reading these posts was very helpful.
