Unstable hip.

I have an appointment at Dr. Surgery on the 24th about my hip which I am 90% sure is not PMR flare. So hopefully they will agree to an X-ray. My daughter told me about Aseptic Necrosis which can be caused by Pred. So I guess you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. On one hand I am hoping it is that and I don’t have to increase my dose and having my hip replacement replaced with a brand spanking new one is just an inconvenience for a couple of my months. I can still walk my dog if I use a rollator or walking stick, I can still row but getting up from the rower takes some thought now. I can still weight train as plenty of people in the gym who are more then happy to fetch the weights for me. Obviously no running. I should know what is going on by the end of the month which will coincide with the taper down to 2mg.

Can you swim without using your legs? A long time ago I would swim for an hour or more at a time while recovering from a motorcycle accident. I had broken one leg, and injured the other knee. I felt really good after those workouts.

I can use a pool buoy but I think I will wait until after the X-ray

I have for years three times a week done water walking with large weights forward backwards and sideways for one hour Mayo said to keep doing it. I had freak accident that fractured r ight shoulder 3 places 10 years ago no surgery and no problems. . Did not need surgery. Healed in alignment.

I used to do that after my joint replacements, really helped. As I have to wait so long for an X-ray I have gone back up to 4mg for rest of week as at least that will take away any inflammation. Even my good old Apple Watch is saying my walking asymmetry is not right. If my replacement needs replacing then I will be back in the pool afterwards doing those very exercises

December 6 I had right hip replacement due to AVN…lack of blood flow which caused deterioration of the joint. Hip replacement successful but now dealing with inflammation in the muscles. PMR flare in upper arms from using a walker and cane. I have been off steroids since October but the arm pain is getting intolerable. I don’t know what to do but I am use to being more active and everything is causing a flare.

Over a month since your last comment @tiateacake. How did your hip situation end up and how have you managed your prednisone reduction schedule? Please let us know how you're getting on when you feel up to it.

Hi Megz, It has been quite an interesting number of weeks. Physio said he was pretty sure my hip replacement was still good but went for an X-ray just in case. It was so bad I had to be pushed in a wheel chair for that as I could not walk. He was right it was still good. More prodding and very painful tortures to be told I had sprained a ligament. Total rest, icing 6 times a day and ultrasound twice a day. After 3 days I could walk again and mentioned the Concept 2 World Erg Challenge was starting soon and that was the one I was doing last year when PMR said hello. I also had a team at the gym and did not want to let them down. My hip felt pretty weak at the start of the challenge but got stronger the second week. It has been brilliant not to even think about PMR and I nearly forgot to take the pills twice. This week I reduced to 2.5 and did not feel good on the third day and had to reduce the amount I was rowing and skierging. So I am dropping like a stone on the individual list but I should still finish in the top 50 of over 5000 competitors which is not bad considering. Our team is doing well and I am so pleased for them. Just made up my next 3 weeks of 2 mg and my attitude to it has changed, it has worked and the end is in sight. I have learnt a lot about the immune system doing this challenge, I was burning about 3000 calories a day which had to be replaced and when my body was saying enough for today I would become very cold, was a strange feeling but I listened to my body and it worked. Challenge finishes next Tuesday, the same day I have my Spring COVID Jab so I will not overdo it on that day.

What a hectic few weeks you've had Tiateacake. It's so good to hear that you were able to heal the sprained ligament with some intensive treatment and that you are doing so well in the challenge. You're certainly pushing yourself physically.

To be successfully reducing prednisone through all that is amazing. Good on you. And it's good to have a healthy distraction from PMR. Although I can't imagine pushing myself as hard physically as you do, exercise and movement are definitely shown to be helpful in PMR recovery. You're in the home run on the prednisone at 2mg. Whoopee!
