Has anyone with ET used PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) for healing?
I was diagnosed with ET 11 years ago and taking Droxia. My current script is 800 mg daily and an additional 200 3 times a week; last blood count was 544. My counts have fluctuated over the past few years. Recently, PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma therapy) was introduced as an option for healing a meniscus tear which I developed 10 years ago but did not have surgery. The tear is now becoming an issue again and this treatment was suggested. Also, my hair has been thinning for about 6 months, reasons listed include: Aging (age 73), Droxia, and stress. Once again, PRP treatment has been suggested. One thought is that since my body is producing so many platelets, perhaps it would work well for a PRP treatment. However, others feel that PRP is not a good option for anyone with ET. Has anyone had a similar option and how was it resolved? Also, I would appreciate any input from Mayo Clinic on this topic.

I'm sorry you're having stress and hair loss. I'm 70, and the effects of aging can be really demoralizing. I do think that HU and maybe the ET intensify some of those effects. As an ET patient, I can tell you that blood banks will not take blood from ET patients, and ET patients are not supposed to give organ donations because there may be a danger of passing the mutation to others. We don't just have too many platelets, but we have a certain percentage of platelets that are immature, misshapen, and just don't work right. PRP sounds like a good question for your hemo. Would be interested in how this works out.
Hello
I have been on HU since 2023. I need to lose wright. I could stand to lose 30 to 35 lbs. I take 400 mg of HU 4 times a week. I started exercising again and I’m so tired. I’m 57 years old.
I’m want to try lost weight medication. Is anyone taking anything currently?
Thanks for your reply, and for the pertinent information as well. My hemo suggested I try PT for the meniscus tear and see an orthopedic physician which I am setting up now. As far as the hair loss, he seems to contribute that to stress. He did not feel PRP was appropriate for me and I am beginning to agree.
