Lifting weights while on ADT: hitting a wall?

Posted by bluegill @bluegill, Jan 28 5:30pm

I'm 5 weeks into it (Eligard). This is my second rodeo (the first time I was on it for 3 years).

I've been doing intense weight lifting 3 days a week for several months now, and I thought maybe this would help me keep my energy up and keep the side efffects away. But today I've really noticed they're back.

Crap.

Sure sounds like a good approach. Why are you doing ADT?

Well I’m not doing ADT but in January two PSA’s were 8.1 and 7.8. Then in March 5.4, MRI was PIRADS 3. Not sure what is going on but I’m trying to be proactive and manage what I can control.

@boniyabes, I took it for 6 months. Been off almost 12 weeks. Next week will be my first PSA/T blood test since before my treatment began.

Thanks. I have been taking Orgovyx since last October. My PSA when I started was 5.5 and I had lab work last month, March, and my PSA is down to .1 and my Oncologist told me it works for me so I suggested if I just take one every other day or stopped taking it but he told me to keep drinking it. I feel like I just want to stop for now ( without telling him) and have PSA lab work after 3 months.

What other treatment have you had? Is this ADT stint after surgery or radiation?

I have a similar history to yours. Bottom line, keep up the weight work and aerobics. At first I was very disappointed with the loss of strength and muscle mass (I probably still am disappointed, but…). Total weight lifted plummeted, but I consider that irrelevant. I almost strictly stick to the weight machines, not the bench, so the loss is less apparent. The positive effects are so important to you; muscle tone, retaining a bit of strength, and the positive feeling of exercise. Not to mention the less apparent physiological benefits. Keep up the good fight my brother.

Yes, had prostatectomy in 2014, had radiation 4 months after, and then another radiation after 5 years when PSA was rising. But last year when PSA was rising fast, that’s when I recommended to my Oncologist to take Orgovyx instead of the Lupron and Zytiga that he recommended. I do my daily walk fir 15-20 minutes, after stretching/warming up.

I certainly hope you’re right, tj, but being a worrier I will always think about it, especially before PSA’s…but that’s just me.

Phil,
All the best to you. Hoping and praying for a good result for you.

I was not sure whether to start a new post or add to this one. I had a biopsy about a month ago, then a petscan.

The cancer has spread to my lymph nodes. I am about to start a regimen with prednisone and zytiga plus injections of Leuprolide (aka Lupron), which is every 6 months.

After having a "minor stroke" two years ago I worked for awhile then retired. Last June I started lifting weights and have a trainer. I am 71.

Is it save to continue lifting weights?

I have only been following this support group for three days, so I am still coming up to speed on things.

Not a Doctor but surprised if cancer has spread to lymph nodes, was surgery and or radiation on the table or did your past history effect the path ?

Gee, it doesn’t seem like you can stop the ADT after all your treatment and it’s still wants to go up. Maybe a holiday?

Almost 5 yrs to the day. PSA rise was very slow until final year when it went from about .10 to .18….and it even dropped to .15 just before starting Orgovyx!
Don’t try to figure this thing out - you’ll go mad.

Had a psma petscan and the lymph nodes showed up. The oncologist showed me the images both from top down and back forward. Very interesting except for the fact he was showing me me.
