I have clear liquid draining from my ears

I have clear liquid draining from my ears, mostly from the right, and the canals show damaged skin. I've seen 2 specialists and neither thinks it's a problem. They are surely incompetant, as the 1st I saw caused an infection in my left ear. The fluid feels like automotive break fluid. Do you have an opinion? Thanks. Greg T.

Hello, Stumbled on this site and am glad I am not alone. I have been struggling with this for 4 years now. I found my ear fluid, itchiness then crusty to be food related. I believed that as soon as I started taking diabetics meds my ear issue started but it could be just old age. Or allergies, which I never had before. I have been using cortisone that helps better than my prescription Hydrocortisone. Got a painful ear infection after eating potatoes salad two days in a row - Ugh. It was on my list of foods to avoid. Obviously lesson learned the painful way.

You have to see an ENT to get a diagnosis. Don't self help.

I have seen my Internal Medicine Dr. and he has not referred me to an ENT. . He doesn’t seem to be worried. Guess I have to ask him for a referral

Trust me, only ENTs can diagnose ear issues. They have the proper equipment.

They cannot diagnose tinnitus though or "fix" it. Most think its just something you get to live with. So if you have the ear thing going on with tinnitus or other nasal issues don't get your hopes up. At least find one that specializes in sinus issues including surgeries. Then look to a specialists that can diagnose nerve issues beginning with your vagus nerve, and spine in neck and back. A good neurologist maybe. It is all connected. Few docs really spend much time on diagnosis these days. It's easier to give you pills or send you on to another specialist. Can't really blame the docs, the government has made them all slaves to the health systems the government controls. When you find a doc that listens to you, respect and admire their courage as they are really bucking the system for you. They are out there, you have to search. If you cannot travel, you pretty much need to spend your time learning to live with your disability. It is real even if no one but you can hear it.

Fluid in the ear has to be drained or it becomes stagnant and will cause problems like hearing loss. They put a tube in the ear drum after it is drained. It makes you feel brand new. Only an ENT does this.

Yes, know that and that does not cause or cure tinnitus. A lot of issues are complex with many connected problems.

Hi Rebecca.  The last word from my Doctor was "Stop cleaning your ears."  It still drains on a regular basis and when it dries it becomes hard chunks similar to Salt but darker.  I've lost hope having something corrective done, and they say they can't even test to see what the liquid is composed of or it's origin.  Canadian Medical Care is in a huge mess.  Thanks for your concern.<br />

Hi Gregory, I have the same symptoms as you. The fluid dries, and feels like scabs or something. I have some pain in mine which leads me to believe it may be an infection. Both ears. Did your symptoms start out of the blue too?

I had drainage from my right ear for many years and had 40 tubes over time. After major ear surgery in 1992 I sprung multiple spinal fluid leaks. After all that time and all those tube insertions my issue was spinal fluid draining into my right ear.
