I am pre diabetic and I have high cholesterol. Someone told me that taking berberine can lower both instead of taking metformin and cholesterol meds

@razelrosey I grew up in a home where my parents were distributors of a company that had vitamins, minerals, supplements ….. etc. I had access to everything and took it (mostly to humor my parents). When I was 18 years old I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. My mother had difficulty with high cholesterol and high triglycerides her whole life. In our cases the “natural” remedies did not make a difference. Insulin and medications were required. My father had the opposite experience. My dad had A-fib. As he became older a doctor wanted him to take a blood thinner and low dose aspirin as a preventive for stoke. He filled the prescription but didn’t take it. He used vitamins and supplements instead. Dad’s resulting blood work was excellent. I’m not saying vitamins & supplements or medications are bad. I think our conditions need to be assessed on an individual basis with treatment tailor made to the situation. I think traditional Western medicine often overlooks vitamins & supplements also dietary & exercise interventions. Sometimes a broader more complete approach is worth considering. How is your pre-diabetes and high cholesterol being dealt with now?

I am taking a statin for cholesterol and Metformin for A1C.
I really want to get of these medications; therefore, I am going to try the berberine for a few months and see what happens
Thank you for you information.

I find berberine and Ceylon cinnamon very helpful for my type2 diabetes. In my experience, some brands of berberine are even more effective than others. And I make certain to take CEYLON cinnamon rather than regular cinnamon as Ceylon cinnamon is safer for one's liver.
It's wise, of course, to do one's research regarding these products as well as for the foods and exercises that will be helpful and to test one's glucose levels as often as one's doctor recommends. Best wishes!

What brand of Berberine do you take?

REPLY

Through the years, I've used different brands of berberine that have been helpful. I'm currently taking Sotalix Berberine Supplement that also contains Ceylon cinnamon, and it's been the most effective for me of the ones I've tried. (I measure the "effectiveness" by the results of daily fasting home testing and by A1C tests at the doctor's.)
I, of course, can't know what will work for someone else, but can only tell what has worked well for me.
Another "of course": We should follow the directions of any supplement or medicine we take. And none will mean we can then pig out on cake and candy. Sorry!
