Terrible left lumbar pain that wraps around to my iliac crest

Posted by mdt70 @mdt70, Mar 27 12:05am

I had occasional sciatica in my left leg on and off for a couple months. Then in the last week, I started getting some sciatica in my right leg as well. A few days ago I woke up with pain and tightness across my entire lower back. I went for a massage with my regular therapist, and she did a super deep tissue and concentrated mostly on my lower back and glutes. The next morning I woke up with excruciating pain in my lower back on my left side, and wrapping around to my iliac crest. Ironically, the sciatica is pretty much gone. My pain is mostly when I stretch the muscle out getting up and down or twisting. . Walking does not bother me. Tylenol and muscle relaxers help temporarily. Do you think my therapist went too deep? Do you think this is a temporary issue? I have no previous history of back problems, and had no known injury.

You’re very welcome. I have relief from the link above. And when I sleep on my side I no longer woken in the middle of the night with my sacrum falling and clunking causing mu iliac crest to become misaligned. No pt, chiro, or neurosurgeon were of any help. The first thing I found was doing 3 gentle bridges 3 x for one week. Then the misalignment stopped. I started the workout above anytime my lower back hips groin or sciatica get mean. However, I have had to start 300 mg Gabapentin a day for the cigar burn feeling I get on the later side of my upper shin. I have si joint arthritis I think from the medical not being able to help me get realigned. Also, my tarlov cysts have periods of being symptomatic. Of course all of these muscle spasms are helped with the above workout. 😊 Everyone is different, wishing all the best!

um.... in your response you said it is "exactly"what the doctor said it is. So then, WHAT is it?! I see no MRI result and no doctor identification. Please share, otherwise no onecan help you and we are shooting blanks in the dark. There are a myriad things that describe what you wrote. If you know what it is then we can offer valid advice as a response. Did you write something somewhere else that I am missing?

@delia74

No, it is not a pulled muscle.
Full spine MRIs illustrate precisely what the ordering doctor identified and explained to me.

I appreciate your interest in advice based on your experience, but definitely does to apply to what I unfortunately have been enduring and what I must deal with.

What did your Dr. suggest to relieve the pain?

You should consider physical therapy for a home exercise program (HEP) to treat your sciatic pain. Massage is only temporary but continued PT can last a long time when continued at home. Don’t expect miracle cures but understand what you’re doing to exacerbate the pain and what you can do to decrease it. The combo of PT and massage can be like changing. PT’s have a large bag of tricks in their arsenal to treat patients. If one thing doesn’t work ask your therapist to consider a different approach.
