Leiden Factor V: Can I use hormone replacement therapy for menopause?

Posted by kms1s @kms1s, Jun 14, 2023

I am heterozygous for Leiden Factor 5, although I haven't had any issues with blood clots so far -I'm 54 yrs old. I'd like to go on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) due to menopause. I've read using an estrogen patch decreases the risk of clots associated with HRT. I'd like to hear if others with Leiden Factor V have used HRT, and if so, if they also went on a blood thinner to further decrease the clotting risk. Thanks!

Hi, I am also considering HRT and I have one copy of Factor 5 Leiden.
I just read a published article. It recommends1) BHRT estrodiol patch and 2) oral capsule Utrogestan (micronized bioidentical progesterone). I can’t post the article link because of being a new member. You can search Factor 5 Leiden and HRT.

This is the info about the article:

@kms1s, please see the comment I posted earlier. The study I mentioned made things very clear for me.

Im a 37 ur old female w factor 5.
7 years ago I had pulmonary embolisms in both lungs. I believe the oral birth control and combined w factor 5...activated me to have clots.
Still on eliquis now and trying to get more info about coming off of it. If it's safe.

Not sure if u like holistic, but if u want to try WELLECO products. It's an auzi brand, natural sourced and I'm taking it for my hormones. It's helped me alot so far.

I was diagnosed with Factor 5 Leiden while in the hospital after suffering a PE that almost killed me. This happened 20 years ago. I was lucky to survive. I have been on blood thinners since then. I am on 15mg Xarelto daily. I am not thrilled about being on a blood thinner but I would rather be safe than die from a PE.

Me too - if I hadn’t fainted would not have gone to ER… It was 2020 July during lockdown- had clots in saddle AND lungs - flummoxed docs since no standard treatment if heparin doesn’t start healing and blood pressure drops… I figure it was just not my time to go. So lucky. Now on Elloquis 5mg 2 x/day. 72 yo now… have Prothrombin + Factor V Leiden mutations … never got pregnant and I’m guessing I was lucky I didn’t or my body resisted to keep me alive.
