Severe carotid stenosis, any help?
Does anyone know of a hospital that successfully treats severe stenosis in the cavernous carotid artery? My neurosurgeon won't do anything until I have a stroke. My PCP is upping my cholesterol statin med, and I eat healty, but I don't want to wait around if there's another option. Is it really that dangerous of an area to treat compared to the normal neck area? TIA!!!

I am a 69 year old female and am told I have a 50% carotid stenosis. I had this done as a result of having migraines since age 26. I switched to a new neurologist who requested a new carotid ultrasound and below are the results. Can someone tell me what level of stenosis I have?
RIGHT:
ICA Velocity:
Peak systolic 85 cm/sec
Peak diastolic 39 cm/sec
CCA Velocity:
Peak systolic 82 cm/sec
Peak diastolic 29 cm/sec
ECA Velocity:
Peak systolic 70 cm/sec
ICA/CCA Ratio: 1.0
Vertebral 60 cm/sec
Flow antegrade
LEFT:
ICA Velocity:
Peak systolic 92 cm/sec
Peak diastolic 39 cm/sec
CCA Velocity:
Peak systolic 82 cm/sec
Peak diastolic 29 cm/sec
ECA Velocity:
Peak systolic 74 cm/sec
ICA/CCA Ratio: 1.1
Vertebral 46 cm/sec
Flow antegrade
FINDINGS: Carotid bifurcations are widely patent and flow in both vertebral arteries is
antegrade.
IMPRESSION:
NORMAL BILATERAL CAROTID SONOGRAM.
I googled this:
Definitions of 'patent' - and one of them is as follows: medicine
(of a vessel, duct, or aperture) open and unobstructed; failing to close:
"the patient is usually left with a patent vessel"
So, apart from interpreting all those numbers, the declaration at the end of the quoted text of yours suggests that you are in good shape, all things considered. You are always welcome to find another specialist and ask for either his/her interpretation of this finding, or to order another set of tests for you for his/her own edification and advice to you.

1 ReactionHi, @letsgetbetter - I would feel concerned if I knew I had a condition that increased my risk but the surgeon would not act on it unless I had a stroke.
A few members who may know something about having surgery for severe stenosis in the cavernous carotid artery and may have comments for you are @esque @jobli0 @feelingthankful @dream1649 @goincd1 @predictable @degarden_girl @lioness.
Have you noticed any symptoms in the past few days, letsgetbetter?

1 ReactionThe surgery to cleanout my right carotid artery was a about 4 to 5 years ago. The initial discovery of a problem was when my GP doctor did a yearly exam. As part of his exam he used a stethoscope to listen to my neck and he said he heard a swooshing sound on the right side. He said I needed to do a test to find out if my carotid artery was blocked, After the the test indicated about a 70 percent blockage, my heart doctor had me sent to a surgeon who would clean the artery out. The surgery went well and the next morning, the surgeon told me that I was very lucky because the artery was 99 percent blocked with just a little pin hole for blood to pass through to the brain. I have had no problems since then and now only go back for checkups every 3-4 years.

1 ReactionThe scan result says your carotid arteries are fine as per the result, “IMPRESSION: NORMAL BILATERAL CAROTID SONOGRAM” you are normal. You may have migraines but it’s not from narrowing of your two main arteries that feed your brain.

1 ReactionAs some of you know I had and experience where everything went white. Doctors determined no stroke but didn't have an answer. My daughter was speaking with friends of hers who happen to be nurses and described what I experienced, and they all said it sounded like my blood pressure suddenly dropped. I have an appt with a cardiologist next week and will ask him if that is possible.

2 ReactionsI have stenoses in the largest artery in the brain, curved in places, was diagnosed 2 years ago, has not had a follow-up, in the last six months, worse short-term memory, always headaches, icy cold arms in the afternoons, had nausea for 2.5 months but a little easier now. Became more unstable. Hugs!

1 Reaction@pagekt56 - wondering how things are going for you? I'm also curious about what your doctor suggested for the carotid stenosis?
@lisalucier I went to a new neurologist who ordered a new study and found that my stenosis is normal and not 50%. The old neurologist insisted on reading his and always came back with 50% and it was getting worse after the second test so he prescribed plavix. After going to the new doctor and cardiologist they said it was not 50% (and it was normal) so I was able to go off of plavix. Good thing I got a second and third opinion.
