MVD surgery for Hemifacial Spasms

Posted by skullzmarie @skullzmarie, Apr 27, 2017

I just recently had microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasms. Tomorrow will be 1 week post-op. I have been told to expect nausea and dizziness because of the part of the brain where the surgery is performed. Surgery went well with no complications. I'm struggling with continued nausea and vomiting when I eat. Yesterday, I was diagnosed with a UTI after having a yoyoing fever, cold chills, hot sweats, and tremors (we believe the tremors are stress induced from surgery). I had a complete work up and was given nausea meds and antibiotics. I had nausea but was able to hold food down yesterday for the first time. The nausea meds made me sick last night. Today, I have taken my pain medication only once. But I am concerned about the vomiting. I plan on speaking with the neurosurgeon tomorrow about the continued vomiting. Today, I have noticed a change in taste. My meds taste normal than wierd. My lunch tasted normal at first then it begain to taste off. This evening, I noticed I will occasionally taste the saline solution that was used to flush my IV. I'm wondering what others have experienced. How long does the nausea and vomiting last for most people? What side effects have you had? I'm so frustsrated and ready to complete this recovery. Please, please, share your experience with me. I'm starting to wonder if the surgery was really worth it...the way that I'm feeling. Thank you for your time.

Hi everyone. I had been suffering from HFS for almost 4 years. Treatments with Botox and acupuncture, Chinese herbs, massage. Nothing really worked. Had MVD surgery on March 5. Came out of surgery with almost complete paralysis on the right side of my face and total hearing loss in my right ear. I’ve had to have an eyelid weight placed in my right eye to enable it to close. Tomorrow will be one month post surgery and I only have 12,5% nerve response on the right side of my face. The doctors say they hope it comes back with time. I am devastated. Total hearing loss in my right ear with a cochlear implant surgery being my only option. Balance is shot. Eye still uncomfortable. Anyone experienced everything going wrong like I did? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @anniec123 , thank you for sharing your experience. I am sorry to hear about your surgery complications. I had mine on 2/10/25, less than 2 months ago. I am recovering well, but my facial spasms did not go away. On good days I have less spasms, but mostly the same as before. I also had Botox treatments before, but did not like the side effects. As I continue to heal, I am hoping the spasms will reduce over time. Have my follow up in 2 months.

I don't know how I can help. I find sharing my experience and talking to people who have the same experience helps. Please take care.
