Bleeding with Levalbuterol nebulizing

Posted by paxmundi @paxmundi, Mar 28 10:48am

Dear Friends,

I nebulized on Wednesday for first time with Levalbuterol. .63 and 3% saline. It went well. That night after the Levalbuterol during my second session I started to spit up small amounts of frank red blood and it continued intermittently until 2 am. Next morning I spat up some brownish blood and a little blood-tinged mucus. Then no more. Altogether it was about a t son and a half. Very scary but I decided not to go to the emergency room and I’m glad I didn’t. I didn’t nebulize yesterday nor do I plan to do so for a while. Has anyone experienced something like this with nebulizing? I am going to continue all my other airway clearance practices: Aerobika, autonomic drainage, stack breathing, ACB, but this scared me sib e I have a history of massive hemoptysis. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Never happened to me but we react differently. Did you try albuterol- I switched to leva because albuterol made me shake badly.

@pasmundi So sorry to hear this happened to you, the brownish blood, blood tinged mucus. Wish it were different for you such that this didn't happen. Hope you are are having good results with doing all the other methods, Aerobika, ACB etc. etc.
Any further information since the other BE patient on this site mentioned to you the pulmonologist she is seeing under the Kaiser Plan in California?

What does the pulmonologist think about your regimen give your history of massive hemoptysis? Is it possible medications herbal or otherwise might be contributing? A pulmonologist with knowledge, training and experience in bronchiectasis/MAC would be able to guide you in these scary situations.

Thank you, Scoop. I didn’t call my pulmonologist because I am in the midst of transitioning to another. The present one failed me terribly. Luckily, the bleeding did not continue, and I have stopped that regimen for now or always. It was only the second time I had tried. The first session had gone smoothly that very morning.

Thank you, Barbara. I have not yet checked out the new pulmo. I am very hopeful everything will fall into place—but right now happy that the bright red blood did not continue and being very gentle with myself. And continuing with low-key airway clearance, which had been giving me good results, as you know, without any bleeding for some time. Deeply appreciate your and others’ concern and kind advice on this forum.

The pulmonologist never offered any of it. I requested Leva b/c I had heard about the jitters with Albuterol, one thing I did while nebulizing, though, was take very deep breaths and holds. That may have contributed to the irritation. This was Wednesday evening. Even today I had very slight streaking, so I am steering clear of nebulizing for now. That was just the second try for me, as I said. The morning session had been successful with leva .63 and 3% saline. Indeed we all have different histories and reactions. That’s why I need a specialist! Thanks for your input, Lilianna.

Apparently Levobuterol can cause bleeding as a side effect. Have you tried nebulizing with only saline 3%? And you are just supposed to breath normally while you nebulize. Maybe let things settle down and try again with just the saline sometime?

What if you use an levalbuterol inhaler instead of a nebulizer. Ask the doctor for a prescription.

That’s an excellent suggestion, Liliana. Thank you so much. Once I have a doctor I can trust again I will request that! I am going to be extremely careful for now and not venture into the nebulizing until I feel far more recovered from this bout of bleeding. There was a small bit of residual bleeding even yesterday so I am going to continue with my ACBT, Aerobika twice or more a day, Autogenic Drainage, which I am still getting acclimated to, and postural drainage with my yoga routine. Not even ready to get back into my aerobic exercise quite yet though I go up and down stairs all day long. Having had that massive hemoptysis in 2012 makes me more wary than some.

Interesting, Irene! I had not heard that this was one of the side effects. I’ll have to google that and inform people in another forum who don’t know that. Big thanks for letting me know! As I just said to Liliana, I’m going to give my poor little lungs some time to recover from this. And not be so extreme in my efforts next time. Excellent advice. 💛
