Umbilical cord regenerative therapy ?

Has anyone had umbilical cord stem cells used instead of knee replacement or shoulder replacement? Used instead of back surgery or neck surgery. And what results have you had?

@jsbegin68 Welcome to Mayo Connect where we are a community of patients and caregivers who share our journeys with a variety of health issues.
One thing that you will notice is that we try to rely on research based information and avoid "Internet sensations " and anecdotal or unproven treatments.
Here is a brand new article where the authors sought out clinical studies of umbilical stem cell therapies -

Here is a recent article about stem cell therapies for joints - it looks like studies are still going on.

One caution I read in many scholarly articles on the subject was to avoid those who are promoting this therapy in stand-alone clinics or online. Here I a list of the current FDA approved list of uses, it is increasing all the time

Has your orthopedic doctor offered you stem cell therapy?

Yes, I did have one shot prior to my hip replacement. It helped for about six weeks, it was expensive! However, as it didn't last, I went ahead with replacement. Good luck.

Was that a cortisone injection or stem cells ?
Did they use your own cells or umbilical cord cells ?

It was Wharton Jelly/stem. Not related to abortions. I wanted to try it/as I was adverse initially to having the replacement. Hope all works out for you.

That is another name for umbilical stem cell therapy, and this is exactly the type of service that is outside the bounds of not only conventional medicine, but unproven at this time.

Research is ongoing, and like other emerging therapies, we will get there, but right now it is unproven, expensive, not covered by insurance and carries risks. As @marbe said, it may not work.

What conventional treatment are you hoping to avoid?

Knee replacement

I had been hoping to find some regenerative therapy to avoid my 2nd knee tkr since the first didn't heal right. But I've never found enough credible articles of anything out there, stem cells or otherwise, that would actually work at this time. I'm sad 🙁 .

We are all hoping for great advances from medical research, but the amount of money and length of time it takes to do the research, testing and bring new treatments to market limits the availability, and often life-threatening conditions for which there are no effective therapies yet take precedence over joint pain.
Too bad we don't have unlimited resources...

2 years later after diagnosis of blocked iliac artery I discover the hip on the same size is bone to bone and that is what is causing the excruciating pain when I walk. So I've probably damaged the joint by continuous walking without assistance for the past 2 years--am to the point of yelling out loud in public from pain from walking. Now I'm not able to see ortho until May 1st. Has anyone here been in the situation for the past 4-5 years of having to wait months for appointments with specialists???? Is this what the virus has caused, have physicians quit due to the pandemic chaos --I'm in Illinois and the mandates and restrictions were abused by the Governor.
