I want to quit smoking: What worked for you?

I cut down to half a cigarette for awhile then went cold turkey. A coworker bought me a huge bag of shelled peanuts explaining that it gave my fingers and mouth something to do. I had a 3 day weekend and stayed home eating peanuts. I stopped drinking coffee as it was a major trigger. Everything is a major trigger with cigarettes. Tough it out and do not cheat. The urges get fewer and milder eventually.

I have totally quit all of my bad habits for over 20 years but smoking stubbornly hung on. Then a few years ago I had major surgery and when I walked out of the hospital I decided not to smoke for that day and I quit for a year and a half. No withdrawal, no anguish, no craving, no problem! Then I got sick again and looking for relief, I smoked a half a cigarette, 5 minutes later I smoked the other half and I was "off to the races"! It took me 8 months to quit again and its been tough! Its been a year now and the cravings are still there but must be lessening. My desire not to smoke has to be greater than my desire to smoke! To keep that going I have to "man up" many times during the day. All I know is I thank God for another nicotine free day and that has to be good enough!
