I was on both drugs at the same time for 5 years, and never had a problem with either one. When I switched rheumatologists due to travel issues, I was taken off methotrexate and the hydroxychloroquine was reduced by half, still felt fine, no issues. I now have PMR and those drugs do not help, except for prednisone. Prednisone was a lifesaver for me for one year. I’m off prednisone now and beginning to feel the same horrible pain again! I have decided to try to get by without going back on prednisone due to its side effects. Wish me luck!

Thank you so very much for responding to my comment!!! I am now learning that nothing is 100% good or bad I just have to learn how to take one day at a time and hope that eventually I feel better. I am learning that for me there’s no magic medication combination length of time you take something it just varies and I just have to hope for the best. My very best wishes to you and thank you again for commenting on my question!!!

I was just diagnosed with PMR. Prednisone was instant relief. From what I’ve read steroid treatment may not necessarily be a lifelong thing. This can resolve in a year or two. I’m scaling back to the lowest possible dose of prednisone. Hopefully I can get off of it totally. FYI if you get a severe headache on one side in the area of the temporalis muscle, get high dose steroids asap. That is a sign of Giant Cell Arteritis and can cause blindness if not treated with steroids asap. Only 10-20% of PMR becomes GCA but it’s important to know about it. It can also cause aneurysms. Good luck and I hope we can all feel better soon!

I took hydrox for 2.5 yrs after I was diagnosed with tick transmitted PMR. VERY tick literate doctor diagnosed me instantly after the REALLY painful onset. An RA doctor wouldn't agree that it was from the tick bite and added meth to my meds. Then I developed type 2 diabetes. I'm 68 now in pretty good shape no soda try to watch the sugar got on some other meds (Mounjaro the latest) by family doc. Just read that the methotrexate can induce type 2 ! Before my next RA appt I'm going to wean myself off the meth (10mg every Fri.) and monitor my sugar.

Did you investigate the tick connection. As I said below I was on hydrox for couple of years. PMR gone but now type 2 and RA allegedly. I say allegedly because I have zero issues except with couple of finger joints there is very little pain and I am very careless and busy with my hands. Eg chain sawing, firewood work, using climbing deer tree stands all fall n winter.
So who knows.

Read about it research on your own. Doctors aren't trained to cure only to treat symptoms. GET A TICK DISEASE TEST. MIGHT TAKE SEVERAL OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME TO CATCH WHEN TICK PARASITES ARE ACTIVE. There is a Lyme disease forum North Central pa that has LOTS of info on these little almost deadly creatures.

Very good. Before I take any new drugs I research the side effects and the side effect percentage of how often it happens compared to how many people took the drug. I’m really tired of pharmaceutical companies selling a cure and when you use it you’re now stuck with some other condition to treat. Some conditions worse than what you started with 🧐
