Has anyone experienced incontinence after HOLEP surgery ?

Posted by azfox66 @azfox66, Mar 6 8:32pm

I recently had HOLEP surgery at the end of 2024. One of my main issues nine weeks later is incontinence or leakage. Been doing kegels but it still persists. Has anyone else experienced this and for how long?

Unfortunately to me there´s a study at The Journal of Urology called - A SCRUTINIZED ANALYSIS OF DYSURIA IN THE FIRST WEEKS AFTER HOLMIUM LASER ENUCLEATION OF THE PROSTATE (HOLEP): WHO SHOULD WE BLAME?
where it´s said that - dysuria currently represents the main problem after endoscopic enucleation of the prostate with Holmium Laser (HoLEP). This scared me a lot, because I have only working kidney and, how can I take a lot of pain relievers without damaging my kidney? And how one can hydrate himself with a lot of fluids knowing that he will feel a lot of pain when peeing? I really don´t what know what to do. I´m really completely lost with all of these information. And worst at all my BPH symptoms are getting worst and worst.

I had HOLEP done last October. I had little or no pain post-op. However, I’m dealing with incontinence and I see little improvement. I’ve read, and have been told, that roughly 30% of HOLEP patients experience prolonged incontinence that almost always resolves itself within a year. For me, it’s been a hassle, but if it disappears in a year I can live with the issue.

I had a Holep in January. Last night I received the results of my first blood test since the procedure. PSA was down to .56 from 27.1 testosterone was up to 654 from 286 I don't understand the reasoning behind these numbers. Anyone like to chime in?

Friends, I hope to have the HOLEP procedure this year, 2025 at UC Davis, Sacramento, CA. I am concerned and preparing for pain from urination post-surgery. My wife referenced Pyridium to help with burning and stinging while peeing. Worth a try. I am 75YO and have had 5 different kinds of surgery and the procedures to me are not the big concern but pain management. Hope to play golf again without peeing at every tree stump.

I took Pyridium after being temporarily catheterized after being unable to urinate and then after HOLEP surgery. It it helpful as it numbs the pain. The only side effect is your urine is orange in color. I hope this is helpful

Aloha. I just flew to Boise for my holep I was in surgery 1/31. I have no underlying conditions and I’m 51. The pain on a scale of one to 10 was never even pain. It was just discomfort and that was a five at times. But it comes and goes it isn’t sustaining all day long. I’m not sure if this will apply to you. I don’t know if you have any underlying conditions. But it’s been over a month now and I’m taking yoga regularly and lifting weights. Occasional thing still exist, but nothing to write home about. I’ve had no side effects from the surgery whatsoever to this point. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Did you experience strong bruning sensation when peeing, after HOLEP? Did you make the surgery with a procedure called MILEP (less invasive)? How do you hidrate yourself knowing that after drinking a lot of water you have to pee painfully? How do you cope with this? Medicines help to relieve the pain? Thank you

I did not experience any burning after HOLEP. I didn't have the MILEP. I drink water when I am thirsty. I bowl on Thursdays and just drink one 20 ounce bottle of water while bowling the 3 games. I can get through the games without having to change my diaper. I did have a UTI earlier this month because I cut back on my water. I am now drinking water more often even if it is just a sip while trying to keep my diaper dry. I am getting close to 4 months post surgery and it looks like I have a long way to go before I get the incontinence under control.

I think my being 24 years older than you may be a factor re pain. Just guessing.

True but not always the case. Here’s a quote from a reply to me regarding holep after 70

“I'm 81 years old and had complete blockage for 13 months. I had no pain after procedure. I have not taken any pain relievers at all”

Let’s hope you experience the same healing

Thank you for sharing your experience. Hope to improve my quality of life with HOLEP procedure and not have a complete urine shut down in my 80s or 90s. Who wants to wear a catheter for one's last days?
