I used a Twin Cities surgeon. The femoral head and acetabular cup and liner were replaced. The new head is ceramic, the cup is titanium and the liner is a cross-linked polymer compound.

At the time mine were done in 2011, there was not a suitable liner for the chromium cobalt acetabular cup - since I was made to use without a liner, the ball would have been so small it would have a high risk of dislocation. I'm not sure what they use now.

That is so interesting. My husband has no pain or failure with his 18 yr old hip other than his rising levels of chromium and cobalt. It's comforting to know that there may be other alternatives to sawing his femur in half and removing the stem. Thank you!
