So close and yet so far away – tapering to 1 mg
I tapered to 1 mg three days ago. Up until now, I’ve only had minor setbacks. Increased soreness, or a brief return of spasms in my arms. I’m having much more of an issue with soreness and discomfort going from 2 mg to 1 mg, as per my doctor’s directions.
In the past I’ve been able to ride out my adjustment to a new dose, even if it took several weeks to get comfortable. I have improved a little, but not enough so far. What’s a reasonable amount of time to give it before I contact the doctor?

What works for one person does not necessarily work for another. Each individuals physiology is different. Remember that your adrenals have stopped making cortisol, it will take time for this to kick start. Discuss this with your doctor and taper slowly, the last 1mg. I know it does not seem a huge leap but it can be for many. Pill cutters and quartering, taking a few weeks at a time, until your body makes the adjustment.
I wish you all the best in your endeavour.
You can go back to 2 for one day. See if it helps. And stay active and wok on mobility. Take a Tylenol?
When I got down to 1.5 (tapering at 0.5 per month at that point), my doc gave me the OK for occasional use of a low-dose ibuprofen 125 - tylenol 250 combo (half the standard dosages of both) that is readily available OTC. I found that very helpful. One pill was always enough on those days when the train seemed to be in reverse. It allowed me to never consider increasing the prednisone dose, and to stay on the taper schedule. Now at zero for weeks with no issues worth mentioning, and no need for any meds.
Ask your doc if that would be ok.
I've been getting a tiny bit better every day. Not really good enough to stay at 1 mg, but much better than I was. . I've never needed to resort to pain killers since I've been on prednisone, though last week was the first time I've thought about it.
I've been working on a message for my PCP - I haven't met him yet and have been messaging over the patient portal for refills and taper conversations.
I'll probably send it today but will see if I feel better enough after my walk to hold off and see what tomorrow brings. We're actually having a sunny 50 degree day here in the northeast so Yay.
Thanks to everyone who responded. I finally messaged my doctor and he told me it would be fine to go to 1.5 mg, and that I could try going back to 1mg in two weeks to see how it goes. I'm sure that he won't mind if I need to take longer to get there at that point. I've already taken today's extra ,5 mg and am looking forward to a more comfortable evening.
After experiencing how badly making a .5mg error in your taper can throw your system off, I have a much better understanding of how things can go haywire on this journey. I really appreciate this community.
How long were you on prednisone before you started your taper?
On 30 for entire month of October, 2023. SED was initially 75. Then tapered in chunks every two weeks to 10 as of 1 Jan 24. At that point, my SED was normal, and rheumy declared PMR was in remission.
Tapered from 10 to 5 at 1 per month, then from 5 to zero at 0.5 per month.
Completed taper end of Feb this year.
