Life long antibiotics after knee repacement
I had double knee replacement and 11 years later developed a severe staph infection in one knee. I had a clean out surgery and a yr later a second total replacement. After another later I am taking still taking antibiotics daily. It looks like I will be taking them for the rest of my life.
I am wondering if anyone has experience with life long antibiotics and what side effects especially gastric issues people have encountered.

My situation is that now I have to take Amoxicillin twice a year prior to a dental visit, even for a cleaning. My issue is that it's another one of the many, many things in a long list of information that I wasn't given prior to my TKR.
I understand the value of the surgeons time to have a lenghty discussion but a printed handout for TKR patients would be appreciated.
I'm not sure what you mean, but IV antibiotics are given in a high dose during TKR surgery, and usually for up to 24 hours afterwards. If I remember correctly, after hip surgery I was not sent home with oral antibiotics. But then I had to have a second surgery 5 days later to fix a problem - that increased my risk of infection, so in addition to the IV antibiotics, I had to take oral ones for two weeks.
How long after your surgery did you get a staph infection?
Every practice has similar protocols. We, as patients, don't know to ask.
I did not have antibiotics post-surgery but did during. Also the surgery type dictates protocol.
My dentist said I will need to be pre-medicated any time I have dental work.
it is confusing because my dentist said the dental association doesn’t
recommend it. There is a risk of antibiotic resistance when they won’t
work when needed. So I am unsure.
I had oral antibiotics for 4 weeks after my tkr.
My husband got staph and was septic 7 years after his knee and hip replacements. Had 7 surgeries in 1 year. Healed now but will be on antibiotics his entire life.
oh, my, that is too bad your husband had 7 surgeries in one year. Sounds dreadful but glad he has healed. I did
have antibiotics after the knee surgery but just not sure about dental procedures. Did take prior to procedure yesterday at 3 mos. after knee surgery.
I have a lot of metal/implants in me and I take antibiotics before dental appointments. I have for many years. If it was refused to me, I would be very upset.
I was a RN who took care of patients with infected joints and it’s not a pretty thing to go through.
That's not my point, I don't mind taking Amoxicillin, it's the fact that as a patient they keep you in the dark by not fully informing you what a TKR entails. In the short amount of time you spend with your doctor to make a decision that you may have to live (suffer) with for the rest of your life.
A few weeks ago, I needed to have an excision by the dermatologist because a biopsy came back as squamous cell carcinoma on my left calf. Because I had a right TKR almost a year ago (3/5/24), I wondered if I needed to take amoxicillin for that as well as any dental work. I called the knee surgeon's office and was told that it was not needed for the excision but would be for dental and for a colonoscopy. Glad I called.
