Liver function (birirubin, globulin, glucose, iron) and Octreotide
Started Octreotide shot in Dec. Labs show Bilirubin going from .7 to 1.1 to 1.5 in three months, iron is 25 and % saturation is 7 (never been low in my life), Globulin is 7% in March and last Oct 22%. Glucose gone up since I started Octreotide. 89 mg/dl, 110, 102, 148, 162. I have neuroendocrine cancer in the liver. No known origin. Grade 2, KI 6-8%, Stage IV. Anyone have similar experience? My oncologist referred me to GI Dr. I expected him to address this not send me to another doctor so I can juggle more appointments since I think this is related to the cancer growing in my liver or the Octreotide. Appreciate any experience you can share.

Yes. Octreotide is known to increase blood sugar. Many have to go on metformin to control it. It is also known to affect bilirubin.
I also have Grade 2, KI - 67 of 6.6% Stage 4, metastasized from small intestines to my liver.. I’ve been on Ocreotide for 2 years now.. My blood sugar did rise, I was prescribed Jardiance. I was on Jardiance for approx 3 months, then made an appointment with a Endocrinologist, she said though my sugar was elevated she believed I could control it with exercise and diet, as long as I can keep my A1C under a 7, I didn’t have to be on meds.. I do recommend seeing a diabetes specialist.. everyone’s medical conditions are different… Hope you get the answers you need..
My blood sugar at one point kept going up and down but changing my diet and a little walking helped. I had my A1C checked 03/03/2025 and it’s going back in the direction that it should be like 6. I’m on Lanreotide it was elevated from this but everybody is experiences are different and I understand that. I have never been on medication for type 2 diabetes but without some small lifestyle changes I was heading towards that.
I do not have experience with ostricide shots but usually given it prior to any medical procedures to keep my carcinoid symptoms at bay.
My lung carcinoid metastasis to the liver. My glucose levels have been high for my baseline. In jan2024 when I lost my lung to carcinoid, my KI was 5. In March 2025 the KI for my liver metastasis is 25 average with KI-40 in hot spots. On my way to Mayo to see what my treatment plan options are!
Thanks everyone for sharing.
Hello, @aliciabusiness5, and welcome to Mayo Connect. I you are dealing with lung NETs as well as liver metastasis. I'm happy to see that you will be going to Mayo Clinic to find treatment options. They have NETs specialists at all three locations.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you again as you seek out answers. Will you continue to post with any questions and concerns?
