What supplements help Osteopenia, Osteoporosis?

Posted by grace1215 @grace1215, Feb 4, 2020

Hi, I am a new member here and wanted to find out if anyone has used AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Citrate for Osteopenia? I have had this condition for 10 years now plus five years with Osteoarthritis of the hip which I am hoping will help not only my hip but the DEXA scan came up with Osteopenia scores.

Hi nme85,
The only boron I take is a tiny amount. I am using up very gradually the pure synergy bone renewal tablets, just taking 2 a week, not 35.
There's the equivalent of 3mg boron in 5 of these, which seems to be suggested daily amount( I just checked my old copy of save your bones)
Well I am hopefully getting boron in food, so I will check which foods have it.
I'm possibly lackadaisical but rely on general idea of good quality varied diet plus the supplements I mentioned

I also am missing boron in my supplements. I am taking Osteo Collagen Pep(fortibone). Also, chews with D3 and calcium, K2-7, magnesium glycinate and a multivitamin. I am thinking of switching all to Osteo-stim and Osteo-sustain from Keith McCormicks Osteonatural supplements. Is anyone taking both Osteostim and Osteosustain?

I take the AOR Ortho Bone Supplement that was recommended by my ND. This does include Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Vit D3, K2, Boron, Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Silicon, Folic Acid, B12 and Vit C. I also take an extra Magnesium Glycinate (Nested Naturals) and D3 (Genestra). Important to note when taking D3 you need to take this with a fat. The recommended dosage is 10 capsules each day for 1,000 mg.

I haven't used AgaeCal, but used something similar, Pure synergy bone renewal based on red algae.

I had problems with over-active thyroid a while ago, I stopped taking the supplements but didn't know if they were implicated. Things settled down and I started taking the supplements again, similar symptoms, extreme tiredness, loss of weight, started after a year or so. I stopped taking, and returned to normal.

I mention this not to put you off, but for awareness. As far as I know algae derived calcium very good option. It may be very unusual to have my problem. I would be very interested to know if anyone else had a problem.

Despite all this I have managed to build some bone, and I hope I am continuing to do so. I am now taking d3, magnesium glycinate and K2. Also diet and exercise important.

I started using Agaecel about a month back.
I'll know on my next scan whether it is helping or not.
Do not want to take Prolia , and I just finished 10 months of Evenity.

I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis at Mayo Clinic in February of 2024. My endocrinologist recommended I start taking Fosomax immediately. I asked for one year to improve my bone mass before starting the drug and she allowed me a year to do this. I immediately started taking Algaecal Plus, Algaecal Vitamin D3 and their new collegen product as well . It was recommended I up my calcium intake. I started drinking more milk. I incorporated light weight training and walking. I was back at Mayo this past February for my physical and had another dexa scan. In reviewing results with my endocrinologist she was smiling. She said rarely did she see this happen but all my numbers were better and that I didn’t have to get on the drug I had dreaded (Fosomax). Also said I could wait 2 years to have another Dexa scan. I was so elated!

That is really good news .
I will incorporate Algaecal D3 and the Collagen into my daily routine.
Walking I do a lot , it comes with my work and I also like to hike and as the weather warms up I will be doing more of that.
My diet is high in Calcium, I eat no processed foods or sugars , time will tell, but I am positive I can turn things around.
I will not go on the Prolia.
I am currently watching a very informative podcast from Margie Bissinger with Dr R Keith McCormick who has written a great book that seems to be very hard to fine called Great Bones - Taking Control Of Your Osteoporosis
You give others hope that things can turn around.

I listened to a podcast recently as with Keith McCormick and Margaret Martin about Strontium and how it will increase your Dexa numbers but not necessarily prevent fractures. Algaecal Plus has Strontium, is your endocrinologist onboard with Strontium? So many differing opinions...
