0.1 micrometer reverse osmosis filter

Posted by lilianna @lilianna, Mar 12 8:00pm

my husband installed a three step reverse osmosis under sink tankless filter- sediment, carbon, and RO 0.1 micrometer filter. I know that carbon filter is an incubator for MAC, sediment filter just collects the basic stuff but does the RO filter with the 0.1micrometer filtration would stop MAC? We could not finf just sediment and 0.1 filters installed in line. All are 0.5 micrometers. Anybody has knowledge about this kind of filtration?

@lilianna Hmm, I think elimination of the tank might solve the issue of bacteria having a place to breed. But maybe that would be a question for whatever lab tested the unit or filters you bought.
Can you find the manufacturer or distributor info and contact them?

Thank you Sue. This in line system is tankless so one thing less to worry, but the carbon filter which is present in all sets is my concern. The carbon filter is about 30 dollars so it can be replaced, what, every two weeks I guess. We tried to install the under sink in line, like you have, sediment and then the 0.1 -0.2 filter but just 0.1 single filters are not sold at all. Well I will contact the manufacturer and ask if and I will share here. Now when I am off the meds I am even more careful with water. Thank you for your time and thought.

If the filters are serial (one after another) and it passes through the sediment filter first, the carbon second, and the RO .1 micron filter third, then flows immediately to the tap, any NTM will be trapped by the final filter. However, I am unfamiliar with how RO works, so you need to be sure.

Thanks Sue. When I figure it out I will share.

Sue,
Can you share the brand of the filtration system you have? I read you describe it somewhere but found it confusing. I live in a townhouse condo with water heater in garage under the kitchen.
Thank you so much!

Sorry, I don't have a brand name system, at least not labeled, and the filters are medical grade purchased online, but not by me so I do not know - we divide responsibilities in our home, and thankfully this one is not mine. I think the current .2 micron ones are from Blu Technology

Thank you for that response, Sue. Would it be too much trouble to ask your co-pilot what he or she knows about setup or where you folks got your info to make the choice you did? That would be SO helpful to so many of us. I’m really lost here and am a one-woman show—still working at 73 and for the foreseeable future, with recent diagnosis of both MAC and Nocardia. History of massive hemoptysis, and tb when young. Would really appreciate help on this point as I struggle to mitigate bacterial load. Many thanks!

At the least, what kind of system this is, since you have already noted that it’s not reverse osmosis.

It's a very simple in-line, 2 filter system with the carbon filter first and the .2 micron second. Each filter is about 10" long and 2 - 2.5" wide. Any plumber or handyman should be able to do it. Ours is just below the floor under the sink, in the unfinished laundry at one house, and just below the cold faucet in the little 😀 house where we winter.
