Reclast problem

Posted by deedee49 @deedee49, Mar 4 10:03am

Before I had the IV infusion reclast I was 2.4 after the infusion mine went to 4.4 severe osteoporosis. Why would that happen?

Can you be more specific? I’m assuming these are t scores from a dexa, but t scores of what exactly?
When were the dexa’s done? Were they done on the same machine?
All of these details make a difference when it comes to comparing the t scores

Sorry yes it's a t-score for lower spine and it was done on a dexa in 2023 and then I had another one in 2024 that's when it showed 2.4 at the same place. Then I had the infusion and I went to a new place and they did a CT scan/bone density test and it came up 4.4. I haven't had a appointment with the endocrinologist that ordered this yet that's next month so I can find out what the reason for that was question hopefully that helps I'm kind of new to this

Osteoporosis is confusing to most, so don’t worry. Just keep asking questions and doing research.

If you have a dexa on different machines, you will not be able to compare them, “apples to apples” , as the machines likely will not be calibrated the same way.

Even on the same machine, there can be errors in how the technician positioned you, affecting the results. It’s just my opinion, but I don’t think Dexa is the best predictor of fracture and it doesn’t provide a picture of bone quality.
Your doctor should order bone turn over markers before, during, and after treatment, to know if the treatment is working.
CTX will show the bone breakdown and P1NP will show bone building.

You can ask your doctor about these tests.

Best,

I believe my last test was a CTX but at a different location. Thanks for the info and I will be doing another one at the same location so we can compare them and I will talk to my doctor

I agree with Sondra’s response. The scans should be done on the same machine for comparison. Also, your doctor should be looking at bone markers for the complete picture. I have had two Reclast infusions with a follow up Dexa scan and follow up blood work for bone markers. My results improved in all areas and my endochronologist advised me that I was able to take a break from the Reclast temporarily. I have more bloodwork scheduled in May to see where my bone markers are at. The bone scans were done at the same facility utilizing the same machine. My understanding is that to get a clear picture the same machine should be used. Keep asking questions and good luck going forward.

My FORMER Dr misread my Dexa scan & simply told me that I had severe Osteoporosis.
I trusted him when he told me that I needed an infusion, but didn't tell me what I would be taking
About 2 weeks after the infusion, I developed debilitating hives!!!
Steroid shot did nothing!
I purchased & used EVERY cream & spray with Lidocaine in it.
Eventually, I discovered that plan old Witch Hazel stopped the itching.
Also, I take 2 generic Zyrtec every day.
All of my joints ache most of the time, exhaustion is another daily headache.
The WORST part is that I changed Drs & she showed me that I have OSTEOPENIA, which I have had for about 15 yrs now!
I just PRAY this drug has not done any permanent damage to my body. I had the shot last August.
Only time will tell!

Sorry to hear about your problem Viki. From personal experience, which may not be yours, adverse reactions can be very individual. Regardless, I reacted to Reclast after Evenity. The Evenity gave be significant pain in my wrists so I stopped it after 9 months. I followed up with Reclase which I had taken before with no problems. After Reclast the wrist pain increased and then spread to my left wrist it really sucked.
To your question it took 12-14 months before I got good movement back in both hands. I would say about 80-85% maybe more. So I can open cans, turn door knobs and lift things, mostly, with no discomfort.

Did you have any adverse reactions to your Reclast infusions? And how many years will you be on it? Thanks so much.

I had a reaction with the first infusion. It was flu like symptoms but they passed pretty quick, about 6 hours. The second infusion, I didn’t have any reaction. Those are the only two I’ve had so far. My bone scan showed improvement so I was given a break. I’m having blood work done in May with bone markers, hopefully I’m still on break.

I am going to take Reclast as well, and would like to know about adverse reactions in your case, as well. Thanks.
