Peripheral neuropathy and sciatica: What helps with the pain?

Posted by yeoj @yeoj, May 28, 2022

Hi guys, bear with me...Started out with cramps in shins and feet, then came the numbness, tingling. Hip pain = bursitis, cortisone shot fixed that, but, I still had sciatica. Ortho sent me to a anesthesia doctor. First shot lasted 2 months. My ortho suggested surgery to fix a couple of nerve root. I smoke, he suggested a stimulator. My appointment to discuss treatment is in August. I'm dying over here with only tramadol to take. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I swim everyday
Early morning at my gym Olympic size pool
Usually I am the only one in the pool
It’s very meditative
Try to join a gym with a pool, and use a kick board if necessary to keep your legs and feet moving in the water

Just peripheral neuropathy
I also walk three miles everyday and 30 minutes of weight resistance everyday
Neurologist prescribed gabapentin and amitryptoline at night
Doesn’t really help
Also, pain doctor says NO alcohol in any form, such as beer or wine, ever ever ever for the rest of my life

@judy123, You might want to take a look at the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy website to see if there are some things you might want to see if they help.

I have sciatica. My pain started suddenly while emptying my dryer. Severe constant pain from my right hip to my foot.
The pain and weakness prevent me from driving and walking the first 6 months. I had a 3 series of steroid injections L 3-5 over the last 18 months and three PT sessions. Also Norco and Motrin. I was never out of pain until my PT tried Mackenzie Maneuver. I noted an improvement the first week and over several more weeks the pain decreased to the point that I have pain relief with 400mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day and doing the Mackenzie Maneuver at home.
I pray you find the treatment you need.

What is the Mackenzie Maneuver? I have sciatica, stenosis, and bulging disc. Lumbar pain shots help, so do the new grounded shoes aka HIKE shoes. Kept me pretty pain free for 6 months. Then, I slipped, didn't fall, but after on and off oral steroids, etc. I bent over a desk, and ended up in ER. Just had lumbar a couple days ago.

I suffered with sciatica for approximately 30 years. And by a case, it’s related to my pelvis, being offset, possibly my legs being offset, possibly my degenerative disc condition. I seem to get relief when I have surgeries and they replace my hips, or they fuse my spine and realign my bio mechanics. Now I use MFR deep tissue myofascial release there’s a section here. I suggest you look at it it gives me tremendous relief. As well as my sciatic seems to be provoked when I sit too much like during tax season if I stop sitting so much and change my economics when sitting I can relieve myself of ongoing sciatic pain. I have also been diagnosed with a piriformis disorder, which also exacerbate sciatic pain for that I get steroid injections in my piriformis muscle and that relieves the sciatic pain. You just have to keep at it. I pretty much am used to it now after 30 years on and off and take it in stride.

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Journavx (suzetrigine) 50 milligram oral tablets, a first-in-class non-opioid analgesic, to treat moderate to severe acute pain in adults. Journavx reduces pain by targeting a pain-signaling pathway involving sodium channels in the peripheral nervous system, before pain signals reach the brain.

Journavx is the first drug to be approved in this new class of pain management medicines.

You can Google the MacKenzie Maneuver...it is a short series of movements. I got sciatica from PT for my back. I get relief from pain injections into my SI joints areas...lower than the standard epidural. Pain when it flares is horrible, so I understand. I also seem to need helped by those HIKE shoes, or Grounded shoes, or barefoot shoes, whatever you call them. Not sure why, but they seem to help. Sleep with pillow under my knees...used to be a side sleeper, but am trying to stay on my back now.
