Thigh weakness/foot drop after spine surgery

Posted by luamiller @luamiller, Mar 27, 2023

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had thigh weakness after lumbar fusion surgery which is creating foot drop. I had my surgery 1 1/2 ago and my leg weakness and foot drop are still persisting. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this and if you have has it resolved?

I'm so sorry you are suffering cher. My brother had lumbar surgery recently for a herniated disc and now has drop foot. He walks with a cane and wears a brace as well. His mobility is quite limited - he can no longer jog, jump or lift heavy weights. Sadly spine surgery is extremely risky - chronic pain, numbness, balance issues, etc. are common. Sounds like you may need a care taker. Do you have family or a friend that can help? I certainly hope so. God bless you.

Has your brother had an EMG to see where the nerve damage is?

No. But my husband has. His hand and foot are numb. We are hoping surgery helps but from reading the posts here most often surgery makes things worse. I am so sorry you're struggling. Do you regret having
surgery?

I've had 3 back surgeries. I regret the second one and the Dr I chose. Apparently my foot drop came from pressure around my knee from the position he put me in for the surgery. It's a very tough thing to deal with!
