Mysterious shortness of breath: What has helped you?

Hello fellow sufferers- having the exact same symptoms. I'm a 38 year old male- had this for a period of a couple of months back in my mid 20's, I thought it was due to some anti-anxiety medication that I had started, but it just went away on it's own. About a month ago I started getting the same symptoms again- not shortness of breath per say, but just a constant feeling that I need to take a deep breath to get "satisfaction" for lack of a better term, and frequent yawning. I had recently started some new medications and thought it might be related- so with my MD's approval I stopped taking the new med, but the symptoms did not get any better. I'm fairly active- weight training 4 times a week and started jogging to get rid of my spare tire 😁; no issues with SOB, chest pain or anything like that while exercising. Symptoms really only at rest, and only really improve when standing up or lying on my sides. I know the common suspicion is that it's acid reflux (or related to anxiety/stress). I have had reflux off and on since I was in my 20's and had the typical symptoms of burning in throat and upper chest, but never the shortness of breath so I ruled out that this was related. I also am not feeling particularly stressed or anxious although I am chronically on antidepressant and anti-anxiety meds so obviously it's always an underlying issue. I'm an RN, and they say we make the worst patients, and it's true- I figured I knew more about what was going on in my body then the medical research suggests, so I didn't even consider trying to treat my reflux. This morning I decided to take some OTC famotidine. It's been about an hour and I can already see an improvement in my symptoms (which I hate to admit). They have not disappeared completely and I'm not doing myself any favors with this triple-shot coffee I'm sipping on, but I'm reluctantly starting to admit to myself that this could be, at least in part, related to "silent reflux." That being said- don't rule out the reflux thing, even if you're not having typical symptoms (i.e. no pain or feelings of indigestion). I'm in no way giving medical advice but am letting you know what is helping me (with over-the-counter medications), and I would definitely recommend at least speaking with your doctor about trying some anti-reflux meds to see if it helps- it's worth a shot. I sympathize with all of you, it's an annoying thing to have to deal with, but don't give up hope- keep searching for answers, trying different things and collaborating with other sufferers to see what has helped them- there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Very insightful @tophthegoph, thank you for sharing! Indeed, I do think there is some connection with the reflux as when I went on Prilosec I, too, noticed an improvement.
