Can Sugar increase symptoms of neuropathy
I am 51 & was diagnosed with PN in July of last year.
I am diabetic, but my A1C has never been over 8.9 & is currently 5.4 (up from 5.0 in October.) My GP says my sugar isn’t causing neuropathy & my neurologist says it probably is.
Anyway, I take 300 mg of gabapentin, 3X a day. Until recently it was well-controlled. Last week I added magnesium glycenate to the regimen.
In December I lost my pet to old age & that broke my heart. My mother also recently had surgery & people were bringing food. So between Christmas, depression/sadness & all the extra sweets, I have had more sugar lately. I am now having the sharp pains in my feet again & really cannot stand to wear shoes/socks for long periods of time. I go back to neurologist this coming Monday.
All this to say - could the increased sugar intake over the past three months have brought on the increased pain, even if A1C is only 5.4?
Do the neuropathy socks help?
What about the creams for the feet?

It is wild!! Sometimes my feet and toes feel like they’re in a meat grinder but then i will step on a piece of broken glass, draw blood and not feel a thing!
Mine feels mine something is biting the bottom of my feet. Somtimes it feels muscular & others is like burning or bites.
Mine feel like that too sometimes!! It’s such a horrible feeling. I never know what I’m going to get. I wish it would just go away.😫
Same!!
I went to neuro today. She didn’t really want to discuss R-ALA or etc. She mostly wanted to do another MRI & up gabapentin. I’m very discouraged
It is wild I sleep and wear soaks. Carpet really hurts my feet and so does wooden floors. I put medicine on my feet then by soaks. What’s sad is if I get really hot I take off my socks in my sleep. Get up to go to restroom and feet kill me.
It’s frustrating when doctors don’t want to discuss things we’re concerned about. I can’t take gabapentin. It affects my eyesight and makes me nauseous. Does it help you?
Yes, sugar is one of the things people with neuropathy can’t eat without paying for it at night. I have learned the hard way. Have you had the biopsies for the small fiber neuropathy and an EMG/ nerve conduction test. Here is the labs required work Dr Anne Oaklander order for me before I could go see her. If you google Dr Anne Oaklander she is a research neurologist out of Boston. She sees patients in two other states Florida and I forget the other one. You need to make sure your neurologist is a neuromuscular neurologist they treat neuropathy.
Yes, sugar causes inflammation and seems to make the pain worse along with other problems. My neurologist prescribed ALA and I'm glad she did. I think the R version is important. YOu can buy this at health food stores and online and it's worth a try. It helps me and made my neighbors pain go away completely. She hasn't had PN very long like I have.
