Had HoLep procedure last November. Since procedure have progressively been unable to effectively empty the bladder after being awakened while asleep. During the day am able to urinate. Currently awakened 3 to 4 times per night with urges to urinate that may be a weak or no stream at all. Not getting much sleep. Scheduled appointment with urologist two weeks ago. Performed a scope of the urinary tract and found no obstruction. Filled bladder with fluid until emptying of bladder occurred. Prescribed oxybutinin, which has been taken over the last couple weeks without any benefit. Doctor’s office recommended taking medication for another week or so to see if conditions improve. Anyone who has had a similar experience after HoLep procedure? It seems the urologist that performed the procedure is at a loss to explain a why or provide a solution.

I am just the opposite. Had HOLEP Dec 3, 2024 and wake up 2 to 3 times a night and completely empty my bladder. During the day I get the urge to pee, and only dribble. The rest of the urine fills my diaper. I was using 6 to 7 diapers per day. I am now down to 3 or 4 diapers per day. If I sit and watch TV I can pee during the day. Of If I am up moving around I can’t. I leak it all. I just drink less water when I must be up and about. I walk 3 miles everyday to stay in shape. If I don’t drink an hour before my walk I don’t fill my diaper.
I had the HOLEP procedure in June 2023. It took about 6 months for everything to settle down in the area of the surgery. It is amazing the change it has made in my life. Now I don’t have to locate the bathroom every time we go to the store. I can road trip and go for hours without having to stop the car and I can sleep thru the night with having to get up to pee. The only downside is the retrograde ejaculation. My wife appreciates not having to clean up after sex. I have no regrets choosing this procedure.
Everyone is different. I read about the various experiences and think will my condition change? I’m almost a month since my surgery. I still have catheter sensations and slight sting that subsides quickly. Otherwise my bathroom stops have decreased entirely. I keep a timer and I now can go 5-6 hours without bathroom breaks. I’m happy but not celebrating since I’m still in the side effects phase. Anything can go away.
I went to an imaging center and had an ultrasound done on both kidneys and the tech also checked to see if I was voiding. I drank 20 ounces of water 1 hour before the appointment. The following week I went to see my urologist. I was not voiding before the HOLEP. I always had 600 ml or more remaining in my bladder. This back up caused my kidneys to start failing. During this ultrasound I voided all but 100ml. Both my kidneys are working normally now. I don’t see my doctor till August and we will see what my PSA looks like after HOLEP. I also have prostate cancer that is being actively monitored.

Check PSA as I had traces of cancer in the material removed. My PSA went from 13+ to .7 and has leveled off there since my surgery
Second to check my flow and retention. First checkup wasn’t great. Second one was much better.

What is the purpose of the 3 month check up after the Holep procedure?
Do you what they are looking for? Do you remember what they did to you at that check up?
